Chelsea FC

Chelsea's senior players Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda likely to go in Andre Villas-Boas clearout

Andre Villas-Boas will be allowed to clear-out Chelsea’s 'old guard’ in the summer and replace them with, according to one well-placed source, “a new, young team”, if he survives this season.

Andre Villas-Boas will be allowed to clear-out Chelsea’s 'old guard’ in the summer and replace them with, according to one well-placed source, “a new, young team”, if he survives this season.

Roman Abramovich is understood to be furious at Chelsea’s run of results and is demanding a dramatic turnaround, starting with Saturday’s fifth-round FA Cup game at home to Birmingham City and, crucially, Tuesday’s Champions League tie away to Napoli.

The billionaire communicated his annoyance in a further round of discussions with advisers on Thursday.

If Villas-Boas fails to negotiate both fixtures successfully then it is felt by some that his position, which has come under severe scrutiny — Abramovich is believed to have already considered whether he should make a change — could be untenable.

However, the owner’s anger is aimed at everyone at Chelsea, not just the manager, after a run of results that has seen the club slip to fifth in the Premier League and struggle for form. “He’s not happy with any coach who has lost games,” the source said.

“But he is not happy with the players either. Some players are supporting him [Villas-Boas] but the old boys are on their way out.”

Among those most under threat are Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda, with the Chelsea 'project’ being undertaken by Villas-Boas representing a drive to reduce the average age of the squad and recruit players who are hungry for success.

Lucas Moura, the 19-year-old Brazilian midfielder who is being coveted by several leading European clubs, represents the type of talent that Villas-Boas is targeting.

The Portuguese has already started the process of changing the squad with the recruitment of the likes of Juan Mata and Oriol Romeu but it is thought he would need to dramatically accelerate that at the end of the season. The task will be made easier because several, older players are coming to the end of their contracts.

Abramovich is also adamant that he wants a team that plays more attractive football and although he accepts this will take time to achieve — possibly the full three years of Villas-Boas’s contract — he will not countenance the club failing to be competitive.

Guus Hiddink’s decision yesterday to accept the £8.3 million-a-year offer made to him to become the new manager of Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala has ended any hopes of the Dutchman taking over at Chelsea as an interim manager should Villas-Boas be sacked.

Intriguingly, it’s understood that Hiddink might have a July break-clause in his contract but there were also suggestions last night that Abramovich was unsure whether he still wanted the Dutchman .

While Villas-Boas insisted on Thursday that he retained Abramovich’s full confidence, he is aware that could change very quickly if results do not improve.

Chelsea cannot afford to finish outside the top four of the Premier League and if there is a danger of that happening then it is likely that Abramovich will act.

The likelihood is that the Chelsea owner would then employ a manager on a short-term deal until the summer and weigh up his options. That would undoubtedly limit the field of potential candidates, although one manager who has expressed an interest in Chelsea in the past — Rafael Benítez — remains available. Whether his style would fit what Abramovich is seeking is questionable.

Villas-Boas has stated that it’s “normal” that not all the Chelsea players buy into his methods and one source said yesterday everyone at the club had accepted this would be the case when he was appointed. “Older players want to stay as long as is possible and some know that will not now happen,” he said.

Abramovich held a series of meetings last week after spending several days at the training ground observing Villas-Boas in action and gauging the mood. His talks included discussions with the manager and technical director Michael Emenalo .

He was also at the training ground last Sunday when a day off was cancelled for the players in the wake of the crushing 2-0 defeat to Everton, a result which led to serious questions being raised as to whether Villas-Boas would carry on.

Those close to Abramovich have pointed out that this managerial appointment, as opposed to previous ones which were recommended, was taken solely by the owner and so he has even more of a vested interest in the 34 year-old succeeding.

Villas-Boas is unlikely to risk captain John Terry for today’s match, hoping the defender will make the Napoli tie as he recovers from his knee bruising, while Ashley Cole is also out with a calf problem which could mean a start for Ryan Bertrand.

Chelsea join £40m race for Napoli sensation Edinson Cavani as they prepare to offload Didier Drogba & Fernando Torres

Roman Abramovich is expected to sanction the purchase of a new centre-forward in the summer to fill the void left by his struggling front pair

Chelsea are poised to enter the race to sign Napoli sensation Edinson Cavani this summer as they prepare to offload struggling Fernando Torres for £20 million and out-of-contract Didier Drogba.

Roman Abramovich is expected to sanction the acquisition of a world-class striker as part of an extensive refurbishment of the squad at the end of the season.

Napoli frontman Cavani, who Chelsea will attempt to stop in Tuesday night’s Champions League round-of-16 first leg meeting, is one of the top targets to fill the void that is expected to be left by the departure of Drogba, whose deal expires at the end of the season, and possibly Torres as well.

It is thought that Napoli will listen to offers of around £40m for the prolific Uruguayan striker, who has supplemented the 33 goals in his first season at the club with another 22 in 28 matches in the current campaign.

Chelsea scouts have been regular observers at the Stadio San Paolo this season but the Londoners know they face intense competition to sign Cavani, who is also high on the shopping list of Manchester City.

Speaking ahead of the Napoli tie, manager Andre Villas-Boas said of the 25-year-old: “He’s an amazing player, but to be fair their strength is in the collective spirit. They have a strong front three with [Marek] Hamsik, Cavani and [Ezequiel] Lavezzi. They are a danger.”

Uefa’s new financial fair play regulations mean Chelsea will not be able to repeat their lavish spending sprees of 2003 and 2005 in the forthcoming summer, nor will they will be able to spend £76m on two players, as they did in January 2011 on Torres and David Luiz, without cashing in on some of the incumbents.

The club are believed to be willing to listen to any club prepared to offer around £20m for Torres and match his £160,000-a-week salary demands.

Chelsea are running out of patience with the 27-year-old who has failed to live up to his billing as one of the world’s best players during a miserable 13 months at the club.

He has scored just three goals in 34 Premier League games and has not netted in any competition since a double against Genk in the Champions League in October, a spell of four months and 20 matches.

Matori, u padu forme i buntovni.
