STOROZHEVE, Ukraine (Reuters) -The road into the newly liberated Ukrainian village of Storozheve is lined with the corpses of Russian soldiers and burnt-out armoured vehicles.

The grisly scenes bear witness to the ferocity of fighting as Ukrainian troops recaptured Storozheve and several other villages in the past few days as part of a counteroffensive in southern and eastern Ukraine.

Some of the dead Russian soldiers lay on the dusty ground beside the husks of their vehicles when Reuters journalists reached the village on Wednesday. Others were crumpled in the grass and fields nearby where they died.

Inside the village, the small one-storey houses that line the road have been badly damaged by shelling, their roofs completely gone or with gaping holes.

A photograph posted online on Monday showed Ukrainian soldiers holding up the yellow and blue Ukrainian flag in front of a damaged home in Storozheve.

The village had been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022, one month after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The soldiers said about 50 Russian soldiers were killed in a "mopping-up operation" and four were taken prisoner. Reuters was unable to verify the number of Russian casualties, although corpses were still strewn across the road and nearby fields.

Storozheve is one of a cluster of settlements near the Mokry Yali river that Ukraine says its troops have captured since their counteroffensive began.

Reuters also reached the nearby village of Neskuchne on Tuesday, providing the first independent confirmation of the Ukrainian advances since Kyiv began the counteroffensive.

Pentagon ‘unable to confirm’ Ukraine’s Bradley losses

The Department of Defense has said it cannot corroborate the demise of at least 16 M2 Bradley vehicles in Ukraine

The US military has refused to confirm the destruction of American-made armored vehicles during Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russia. The statement came after Moscow released videos of charred M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles abandoned by Kiev’s troops.

“I’ve seen the reports but I can’t corroborate some of the video and imagery coming out of that,” Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters on Tuesday. “I just wouldn’t be able to confirm the reports... at least what we’re seeing from [the] Russians.”

Tuesday’s announcement that the US will be sending more Bradley and Stryker armored vehicles to Kiev – as part of a $325 million package drawn from Pentagon stockpiles – was not a response to battlefield losses and was planned in advance, Singh insisted.

“Something that went into our calculations when we provided this equipment to the Ukrainians is that there could be battlefield losses and damages as the fight continues,” she said.

Last month, the Pentagon and the State Department dismissed photo and video evidence of US-supplied equipment being used by Ukraine to attack Russia’s Belgorod Region as “fuzzy pictures on social media.”

The first images of the destroyed Bradleys emerged on June 9, showing equipment later identified as belonging to Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade. In addition to several Bradleys, the photos and videos showed a knocked-out German-made Leopard 2 tank. A new video surfaced on Tuesday, showing Russian soldiers recovering the Western-made armor.

According to the Dutch-based weapons-tracking website Oryx, Ukraine lost four regular and three mine-clearing Leopard 2s, as well as 16 Bradleys.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told a group of Russian war correspondents on Tuesday that Ukraine had lost “at least 160 tanks and 360 armored vehicles” during its recent counteroffensive

The loss of Western heavy equipment was an unfortunate surprise for Kyiv - French general “The current losses were a bad surprise. After all, everything is not going the way the West planned, ” said General Olivier Kempf in an interview with Figaro. He added that a large number of Leopard tanks and Bradley armored vehicles are out of action, and it is not easy to repair them, if only because it is difficult to find workshops and mechanics in combat conditions.

Russian deputy PM ridicules von der Leyen chip claim

The EU commission president suggested in late 2022 that Moscow was using home-appliance imports for fixing arms

Russia does not need foreign chips to repair its military equipment as it has no shortage of its own, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov has said, countering a claim made by the head of the European Commission.

Manturov was referring to the statement by the commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, who said late last year that the Russian military was removing chips from foreign dishwashers and refrigerators to make good its hardware on the battlefield in Ukraine.

“It sounded somewhat strange, at least, because it is simply impossible to use a chip a second time, speaking in technological terms, in most cases. Often, separate microelectronic chips are designed for the equipment, which is produced directly for the customer,” Manturov, the head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Consumer electronics and appliances use generally available chips, which are produced by many countries, primarily ones friendly to Russia, he argued.

“If we are talking about weapons and military equipment, then the requirements for microcircuits are different, they are by orders of magnitude larger,” Manturov explained, adding that Russia has such technology itself.

A spike in European home-appliance imports by Russia’s neighbors in the wake of Western sanctions, and Moscow’s introduction of a parallel import mechanism have led to wide-spread media speculation about its possible use of appliance parts in its military gear.

Global chipmakers started suspending semiconductor chip sales to Russia after US sanctions were imposed in February 2022. Washington announced a package of measures aiming to undermine Russia’s military capability, which included a ban on chip sales to the country. However, according to media reports, Western sanctions failed to hamper the flow.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Chinese defense firms have been supplying Russia with components suitable for military use. The report claimed that despite repeated attempts by the US to shut off the flow of such parts through Türkiye and the UAE, tens of thousands of shipments have been successfully completed.
