John Kerry arrives in Iraq as more cities fall to ISIS militants

Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- As radical Sunni militants snatch city after city in their march to Baghdad, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Iraq on Monday during the country's tensest time since the U.S. withdrawal of troops.
He'll meet with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, the man some say needs to step down.
With al-Maliki's Shiite-led government losing more ground to militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Kerry has implored the leader to rise above "sectarian motivations" to become more inclusive and more representative of its population.
Kerry will also meet with Iraq's foreign minister as well as both Shiite and Sunni leaders.
His trip will "emphasize our highest-level commitment to Iraq during this time of crisis," a State Department official said.
Kerry will also speak with key leaders about forming a new government "in line with the constitutional timeline that they're on."

But outside the rooms of high-level talks, parts of Iraq are falling by the day. Here's the latest on the crisis that is spilling far beyond Iraq's borders:
Dozens of prisoners, several police officers killed
At least 71 prisoners and five police officers were killed Monday when militants attacked an Iraqi police convoy transferring inmates from one prison to another, police said.
Five militants were also killed. It was not immediately clear whether ISIS was behind the attack.
The convoy was headed from Hilla, a predominately Shiite city south of Baghdad, to another prison north of the city. Police did not provide further details about the attack.
ISIS captures even more ground
ISIS militants continued their violent march toward Baghdad over the weekend from both the north and the west. At least 70% of Anbar province is now under the control of ISIS, two security officials in the region told CNN.
ISIS is on a mission to create an Islamic state across Sunni areas of Iraq and in Syria.
They've taken over not just the Tal Afar airbase in northern Iraq, but also the entire town of Tal Afar, officials said.
The fighters also seized the western Anbar town of Rutba, 113 kilometers (70 miles) from the borders of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, security sources in Baghdad and Anbar told CNN on Sunday.
Then there's Qaim. After ISIS captured the city along the Syrian border on Saturday, the militants now enjoy a stronghold and a number of other towns in Anbar province. And that means fighters now have a direct line to the western outskirts of Baghdad.
Sharia law spreads
One of ISIS' biggest victories came when it took over Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, earlier this month. On Sunday, witnesses said militants took the capture one step further when ISIS members paraded around the city in vehicles, announcing on loudspeakers that it has decided to form Islamic Sharia courts in Mosul.
Sharia law covers both religious and non-religious aspects of life, and ISIS has begun imposing Sharia law in the towns it controls.
Boys and girls must be separated at school. Women must wear the niqab or full veil in public. Music is banned, and fasting is enforced during Ramadan.
The military denies huge losses
But Iraq's military says it's not losing as much ground to ISIS as some may think. The military actually made a "strategic withdrawal" in some areas, spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim Atta told reporters.
He said the withdrawals were part of a campaign to "open all these fronts so we can strengthen our positions." But Atta did not detail the specific locations.
Two security officials told CNN that Iraqi forces have withdrawn from Haditha, about 270 kilometers (about 168 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
But even if some withdrawals were strategic, it's unclear when or how Iraqi forces could retake ares now in the hands of well-armed ISIS fighters.
The military said it has fought back against militants with airstrikes. Officials showed reporters footage of airstrikes they said took place in Tal Afar.
Atta said the video showed a "large number of ISIS forces fleeing these strikes" that left up to 50 people dead.
Recruiting stations get pummeled
Apparently those trying to join Iraqi forces are at risk before the even enlist.
In the Shiite-dominated city of Hillah, south of Baghdad, at least four people were killed in a shelling attack on a recruiting station. Another 34 people were wounded.
Hundreds of predominantly Shiite men came to the recruiting station to answer a call to arms to protect Iraq.
U.S. sends more help
The U.S. will have a greater presence in Iraq aside from Kerry's visit this week. About 300 U.S. military advisers will arrive in Iraq, a senior defense official said. They will not be deployed all at once.
In addition, some U.S. military personnel already at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad will be reassigned and become advisers, Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said.
But U.S. President Barack Obama said there's only so much the United States can do.
"Part of the task now is to see whether Iraqi leaders are prepared to rise above sectarian motivations, come together, compromise," Obama told CNN's Kate Bolduan.
"If they can't, there's not going to be a military solution to this problem. There's no amount of American firepower that's going to be able to hold the country together, and I've made that very clear to Mr. Maliki and all the other leadership inside of Iraq."

Syria: top FSA officers quit

Staff writer, Al Arabiya News
Saturday, 14 June 2014
Nine top officers from the moderate Free Syrian Army resigned Saturday over shortages and mismanagement of military aid from donor countries to their uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, Agence France-Presse reported.

“We seek your [the rebels’] forgiveness in resigning today, leaving behind our responsibility as chiefs of battlefronts and (opposition) military councils,” AFP quoted the officers as saying in a statement.

Their resignation comes more than three years into an anti-Assad revolt, which saw protesters take arms against the regime after the army and security forces unleashed a brutal crackdown against dissent.

Some Western military aid has trickled into Syria in recent weeks, but overall the United States has been reticent to arm rebels over fears advanced weapons could end up in jihadist hands.

Supreme Military Council bypassed

Weapons shipped to Syria from the West, but more significantly from Gulf countries, are usually sent to specific groups, rather than to the Supreme Military Council, which was meant to coordinate the rebel military effort.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mohammad Abboud told AFP he and the eight other rebel officers resigned because the “SMC has no role any more. Donor countries have completely bypassed it.”

Instead, donor countries have funneled military aid, including U.S.-made anti-tank missiles, to factions of their choosing, Abboud said.

“While we thank donor countries for their assistance, it has been really insufficient, and simply too little to win the fight,” Abboud said.

Rebels fighting Assad’s regime have repeatedly urged the West to give them specialized weaponry to help tip the balance in the war against Assad’s forces, which is backed by Iran, Russia and powerful Lebanese movement Hezbollah.

Earlier in June, President Barack Obama said Washington would “ramp up” support for rebels, signaling a change in U.S. policy.

Islamist militancy

But, faced with successive military defeats around Homs and Damascus province, rebels say they lack the aid needed to change the course of the war.

“We are fighting both the army and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS),” Abboud said, referring to a jihadist group operating in Syria and Iraq that Syria's opposition turned against in January.

“Yet we haven’t got the help we need from countries who say they support our demands for democracy and a civil state.”

ISIS has been battling a range of other rebel groups, from moderates like the FSA to Syrian Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, since January.

The inter-rebel fighting is estimated to have killed 6,000 people.

Meanwhile ISIS has put fighting on hold in Syria while it brings in weapons seized inside neighboring Iraq, a monitoring group that tracks the violence said on Friday.

ISIS fighters appear to hold back in Syria this week, especially in their eastern stronghold near the Iraqi border, while their Iraqi wing was making rapid military gains, and vowed to advance to Baghdad.

On Monday, ISIS fighters spearheaded a major offensive in Iraq, seizing swathes of territory in predominantly Sunni areas and pushing towards Baghdad.

In early June, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she favored arming Syria’s moderate rebels but was overruled by Obama.

Western officials have also warned of security risks coming from the Syrian conflict. They warned that jihadists, holding Western passports, have joined radical Islamist rebels on ground in Syria and could possibly return to the West.

France deports jihadist recruiter

On Saturday, France announced that it has deported a Tunisian who was accused of recruiting young jihadists to fight in Syria, deeming him a threat to national security, AFP reported.

The interior ministry said the 28-year-old was expelled to Tunisia on Thursday “as a matter of absolute urgency in view of the threat that his presence posed for public safety and state security.”

A French official said the Tunisian “played a central role in the recruitment of young jihadists” in the southeastern French city of Grenoble.

He is suspected of having taken part in the recruitment of young jihadists who were trained in Tunisia before being sent to Syria.

On April 23, the French government adopted a plan to fight jihadist networks which called for the immediate expulsion of foreigners implicated in them.

On June 3, Prime Minister Manuel Valls increased France’s estimate of the number of its nationals embroiled in Syria's civil war to more than 800 and warned that they pose an unprecedented security threat.

The warning followed the arrest of Medhi Nemmouche, a French jihadist suspected of carrying out last week’s Brussels Jewish Museum killings after spending a year fighting in Syria.

Iraq Crisis: ISIS Terrorists were Trained by US in 2012 for Syria Conflict
By Johnlee Varghese
June 19, 2014 15:44 IST

As the American government is contemplating on whether or not to launch an airstrike on ISIS that is threatening to destroy Iraq, reports have now surfaced that way back in 2012, the US Army had trained members of the same terrorist group in Jordan.

As per several corroborated reports, hundreds of ISIS militia were indeed trained by US instructors for covert operations to destabilize Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, though the training was strictly for Syria.

ISIS has made an astonishing advance into the country since last week. Thousands of residents, police and soldiers have fled the fighting in key cities including Mosul and Baquba. Reports also state that ISIS terrorists have beheaded soldiers, besides taking up mass executions and posting it online.

In a recent development, the Al Qaeda-inspired group have also taken control of Iraq's largest oil refinery, located 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Baghdad.

Back in February 2012, WND had reported that the US, with the help of Turkey and Jordan, was running a training base for Syrian rebels in the Jordan. German weekly Der Spiegel also confirmed in 2013 that the US was still training Syrian rebels in Jordan.

The report noted that the organizers of the training wore US Marine uniforms, and the training focused on the use of anti-tank weaponry. The ISIS terrorists, who now hold almost the entire north of Iraq, have quite effectively neutralized most Iraqi tank battalions put against the invading forces.

The German magazine had also reported that the US would be training a total of 1,200 members of the Free Syrian Army in two camps in the south and the east of Jordan.

The Guardian had also reported back in March 2013 that US trainers were aiding Syrian rebels in Jordan, along with British and French instructors.

ISIS, also known as ISIL, has let loose a reign of terror both in Syria and Iraq. The group has been denounced even by Al-Qaeda for its brutality and violence.

A USA-ISIS tie-up is plausible, considering the fact how the CIA was responsible for the strengthening of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. It is widely reported that during the anti-Soviet war, Osama Bin Laden and his fighters received American and Saudi funding. Defence analysts strongly believe that Bin Laden himself had received security training from the CIA.

The US, which is closely monitoring the situation in Iraq, is reportedly flying F-18 surveillance missions in the country from an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, officials confirmed to Fox News.

The F-18 surveillance missions are being launched from the USS George HW Bush. While the Obama administration is yet to decide on airstrikes, the US government has authorized "manned and unmanned" surveillance flights for collecting information.
