O'Sullivan reaches Shanghai semis

World champion and world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan moved into the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters in China by defeating Mark Williams 5-3.

He will play Stephen Maguire in the semi-finals on Saturday after the Scot saw off the challenge of Ryan Day 5-4.

"I'm the oldest player in the tournament and there are many young and hungry players who can pot better than me," said O'Sullivan.

"But my break-building's there and if I get momentum I can be tough to beat."

O'Sullivan started brightly with breaks of 93 and 87 for a 2-0 lead, before Williams rallied with a run of 45 to reduce the arrears.

But O'Sullivan, who is aiming to become the first player for 15 years to win three consecutive ranking titles, established a 3-1 interval lead with a cool century break in the fourth frame.

Welshman Williams compiled a 55 break to make it 3-2 before O'Sullivan added a break of 106 to restore his two-frame cushion.

A superb 128 break from Williams kept him in the fight, but O'Sullivan finished the job with a nerveless 78 run to progress.

Williams said: "It was an excellent game and it could have gone either way. I played well but Ronnie makes breaks from nowhere.

"He's probably the best player ever. I'm disappointed because I've won a few tournaments in China and if I'd got through the match tonight I could have gone on to win this one."

Glaswegian Maguire, meanwhile, held his nerve to beat Day in a tense final frame decider.

Day led 2-1, but Maguire pocketed breaks of 114 and 64 to keep his hopes of a Chinese double alive having won the China Open last season.

Breaks of 81 and 61 then kept Day, last season's runner-up, in the hunt, but he missed his chance to clinch victory in the decider.

Brilliant O'Sullivan downs Williams

Ronnie O'Sullivan was back to his brilliant best as he beat Mark Williams 5-3 to move into the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters.

O'Sullivan had looked a little disinterested and sluggish in his last 16 win over Joe Perry, but needed to produce his A-game against Williams who delivered the sort of performance that probably would have beaten any other player on the tour.

O'Sullivan made a blistering start to the contest as he produced breaks of 93 and 87 to take an early 2-0 advantage but helped by a break of 45, Williams took the next frame.

A truly stunning break of 100 from O'Sullivan followed though as he made light work of the balls despite a number of them being in ugly positions.

That made it 3-1 and after the interval he looked set to extend his lead further but a rare slip-up - a missed pink - ended a break on 53 and then Williams came back superbly to clear the table and nick the frame.

Williams was now brimming with confidence and dazzled the crowd in the next frame with a clearance to the pink of 128.

However, he came up just short as he was punished for an average safety shot in the what ultimately proved the final frame as O'Sullivan produced a match winning break of 78.

The two centuries that O'Sullivan produced were actually his first two of the tournament but he will be near impossible to stop if he can replicate this form for the rest of the tournament.

"It was a good match, I'm pleased with my level of performance," said O'Sullivan. "Mark is tough to beat and doesn't make it easy for you.

"He can make you sit in your chair for long periods so you have to score when you get the chance.

"I'm the oldest player in the tournament and there are many young and hungry players who can pot better than me, they are confident and believe they can win.

"But my break-building is there and if I get some momentum I can be tough to beat."

The man that will try and stop though is Stephen Maguire after the Scot came through a tense affair with Ryan Day 5-4.

There was never more than a frame between Maguire and Day but the world number two showed his trademark Scottish guts to dig out the victory.

The highlight of the match for him was a break of 114 which he produced in the fourth frame when 1-2 down.

In the afternoon session, Mark Selby produced a sterling comeback to defeat Marco Fu 5-3 and book his place in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters.

The "Jester from Leicester" took an early lead thanks to a 77 break but then Fu won the next three frames to lead 3-1 at the interval.

The first frame back was the match's key one however, as there was just two points between the players with one red remaining.

However, Selby then got in to clear, and after that there was no stopping him until the end of the match.

Breaks of 64 and 85 helped him take a 4-3 advantage and then in the final frame efforts of 36 and 56 were enough for the win.

"I was just rubbish before the interval but when I got the chances after the break I was able to take them," said Selby.

"I'm really happy to be in the semi-finals, I didn't play as well today as my two earlier matches.

"Marco kept it tight and didn't give me any chances but after the break I played much better."

Selby will play another youngster in the form of Ricky Walden in the semi-finals, after Walden disposed of Steve Davis 5-2 in fine style.

The Welsh based Englishman - who at 25 years old is the same age as Selby - producing a sparkling clearance of 139 in the final frame to wrap up the victory.

Walden had been 2-0 down in the match before winning five frames in a row with breaks of 53, 71, 65, 58 and of course that final 139.

The key frame of the match came with Walden leading 3-2: in that frame Davis had a 65-12 advantage but then Walden's clearance of 58 saw him nick the frame.

It was the second consecutive come-from-behind win for Walden who was 4-1 down in his quarter-final with Neil Robertson before going on to win 5-4.

Walden said: "It was a tough game, I'm thrilled to get through as Steve is a class player and made it very tough.

"I'm playing well enough to win the event but I've got a semi-final first. It's going to be a tough match for me, but I've got nothing to lose now."

O’Sullivan Edges Williams In Chinese Cracker

Ronnie O'Sullivan stayed on course to win three consecutive ranking event titles with a 5-3 victory in a superb match against Mark Williams at the Roewe Shanghai Masters.

There were three centuries and five more breaks over 50 as the Grand Stage crowd was treated to a classic exhibition of break-building between two of snooker's most successful players.

O'Sullivan, on the best roll of his career having won the 888.com World Championship and Northern Ireland Trophy, stretched his winning run to 13 matches and moved within two more of becoming the only player other than Ray Reardon, Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry to take three straight ranking crowns. He faces Stephen Maguire over 11 frames in tomorrow's semi-final.

Runs of 93, 87 and 100 put the Rocket 3-1 up at the interval. He made a 53 in the next only for Williams to pinch it with a 55 clearance. Tons were traded in the next two, O'Sullivan rattling in a 106 then his opponent responding with a 128. And Chigwell's O'Sullivan needed only one chance to clinch the match in frame eight, rolling in a 78.

"It was a good match, I'm pleased with my level of performance," said world No 1 O'Sullivan. "Mark is tough to beat and doesn't make it easy for you. He can make you sit in your chair for long periods so you have to score when you get the chance.

"I'm the oldest player in the tournament and there are many young and hungry players who can pot better than me, they are confident and believe they can win. But my break-building is there and if I get some momentum I can be tough to beat."

Williams said: "It was an excellent game and it could have gone either way. I played well but Ronnie makes breaks from nowhere. He's probably the best player ever. I'm disappointed because I've won a few tournaments in China and if I'd got through the match tonight I could have gone on to win this one.

"If I keep playing like that I've got every chance of getting back in the top 16 for next season. Going to Pontin's is hard but it's something you've got to do."

Maguire ensured a semi-final between the world's top two ranked players with a narrow 5-4 defeat of Ryan Day.

There's was never more than one frame between them, Maguire making top breaks of 114 and 64 while Day knocked in 81 and 61. Welshman Day was among the balls first in the decider but missed a straight-forward blue on 17.

Glasgow's Maguire made a vital 43 and eventually sealed it by potting the last red.

"It was no different to my first two games, I've been very lucky here because no one has played well against me, and usually if I played like that I'd be out in the first round," admitted Maguire, who is on target for a unique double having won the Honghe Industrial China Open in Beijing in April.

"I've just been falling over the line. But at least I'm in the semi-finals now, I can look forward to it and hope to step my game up a couple of gears."

Asked if he thought that O'Sullivan was unbeatable, Maguire had his tongue firmly in cheek when he replied: "Yes, he is unbeatable, I'm just going to show up to make up the numbers tomorrow. If I get one frame I'll be happy. I just hope the chair will be comfortable because I'll be sitting in it the whole time."

Day, runner-up here last year, said: "Neither of us were fantastic, there were a few scrappy frames. I played well in my first two matches but I didn't feel sharp tonight. I had a good chance in the last frame but something went through my mind at the wrong time and I missed the blue."

Walden shocks Selby to reach first final

Ricky Walden shocked Mark Selby 6-4 to reach the final of the Shanghai Masters, his first in a ranking tournament.

The world number 35 won five consecutive frames to seal the win after he was 3-1 down at the mid-session interval.

Walden, as in many of his matches this week, took some time to find form. However the majority of Selby's early successes were in close frames.

The 'Jester from Leicester', ranked fourth in the world, failed to record a half-century in the match as his opponent built momentum with runs of 58 and 86 to level at 4-4.

Flint cueman Walden was a massive underdog, having reached his maiden ranking semi-final after disposing of veteran Steve Davis in the last eight.

His slow progress up the rankings - 13 places in three years - failed to mark him out as a player capable of winning the tournament, but his showings in Shanghai have proven otherwise.

Selby, who has won the Welsh Open and the Masters in his career as well as reaching the final of the 2007 World Championship, recorded three breaks above 40.

However two of those were in the fourth frame and the other in the third as he struggled to record a significant visit in the second half of the encounter.

Walden will face either Ronnie O'Sullivan or Stephen Maguire in the final. The 'Rocket' is bidding to become the first player since Stephen Hendry in 1993 to win three rankings events in a row after victories in last season's World Championship and the Northern Ireland Trophy.

Walden Springs Shanghai Surprise

Comeback king Ricky Walden recovered a 4-1 deficit to beat Mark Selby 6-4 and reach the first ranking final of his career at the Roewe Shanghai Masters.

Walden's great run in China continued with victory in today's first semi-final. His week has seen him defeat players with a combined total of 67 ranking event titles as he aims for his first.

His win leaves Selby with three consecutive ranking events semi-finals to his name in China but as yet to make that final break through.

"I’m thrilled to bits to be in my first final but it was a real struggle out there this afternoon. I had a bit of luck today but then I’ve had plenty of bad luck over my career so I think it evens itself out, but I’m happy to have some today.

For Selby it was a case of what might have been. His 4-1 lead evapourated and the Jester from Leicester was unable to halt the slide.

"Obviously disappointed to lose from 4-1 up. Ricky didn’t perform up to that point but after that he played a lot better. I seem to do really well over here in China, I thought I had a good chance to go on and win the tournament here but it hasn’t happened.

"I can’t put my finger on it, I had plenty of chances but for whatever reason I couldn’t take them," Selby admitted.

Neither player was at their best, highlighted by the fact there was no break of over fifty in the pre interval session. Selby could have gone into the break 4-0 up but having taken the first two he was amongst the balls again in the third but missed a straight forward red. Walden responded with 41 before snookering the Leicester cueman and eventually claiming the frame.

The World No.4 aiming to reach his fourth ranking event final took the next with runs of 41 and 47.

After the break Selby knocked in a run of 50 to help secure the frame and a 4-1 lead. Walden reduced his arrears in frame six and continued his revival in the next two.

The Flintshire potter was in all sorts of trouble escaping from a snooker in frame seven, he did so at the ninth attempt but when Selby attempted to play safe Walden capitalised with a 58 to narrow the gap to one.

The 25-year-old then pulled level with an 86 in frame eigth, the first frame of the match to be completed in under twenty minutes. That became four on the spin as Walden moved to within a frame of his first ranking event final.

He looked set to do that in the following frame but missed a straight forward red when trying to open the pack. Selby couldn't take advantage and Walden knocked in a break of 47 to book his place in tomorrow's final where he'll face one of the top two players in the world.

"I’m not bothered who I face, it’s the old cliché. Stephen is a good friend of mine so it would be good to play him but Ronnie is the best in the world so I don’t mind. To be honest for three years in my head I’ve been expecting to come to events and win them, so it’s good to get to a final at last," said Walden who'll relax this evening by watching Avril Lavigne in concert.

Walden stuns Selby to reach final

Qualifier Ricky Walden staged a superb fightback to beat world number four Mark Selby 6-4 and book his place in Sunday's Shanghai Masters final.

The world number 35 was 4-1 behind his fellow Englishman before winning five frames in a row to reach his first major final at the age of 25.

He will face either Ronnie O'Sullivan or Stephen Maguire in the final.

"I'm thrilled to bits to be in my first final but it was a real struggle out there," said Walden.

"I had a bit of luck today, but then I've had plenty of bad luck over my career so I think it evens itself out, but I'm happy to have some today.

"To be honest, for three years in my head I've been expecting to come to events and win them, so it's good to get to a final at last."

Selby, last season's Masters and Welsh Open champion, said: "Obviously I'm very disappointed to lose from 4-1 up.

"Ricky didn't perform up to that point but after that he played a lot better.

"I seem to do really well over here in China. I thought I had a good chance to go on and win the tournament here but it hasn't happened."

idemo kralju

Bez obzira, blago tebi. Znaci sutra finale Roni-Valden? Sutra ceo dan necu biti kuci tako da cu i to propustiti. Mozda odgledam neki snimak, ako se ovi sa ES smiluju da puste.

O'Sullivan & Walden set for final

World champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and qualifier Ricky Walden both staged superb fightbacks to book their places in Sunday's Shanghai Masters final.

O'Sullivan trailed Scotland's Stephen Maguire 5-4 in his semi-final but won the last two frames to snatch victory.

The Englishman produced a stunning break of 145 to win the decider.

Walden, ranked 35 in the world, came back from 4-1 behind to beat world number four Mark Selby 6-4 and reach his first major final at the age of 25.

O'Sullivan also knocked in a break of 141 and three more of over 50 in an impressive display against the world number two.

"I didn't play as well as I can but Stephen made it tough, so it was nice to win those last two frames and get over the line," he said.

"It was tough at times out there, I couldn't seem to find any rhythm, but my 145 in the last frame was a good way to finish the match."

Maguire said: "I had my chances, but to be honest there wasn't much I could do in those last two frames.

"It's disappointing not to have reached the final, but fair play to Ronnie because he played well, especially under pressure in those last two frames."

O'Sullivan is the clear favourite to win the best-of-19 showdown but Walden is determined to make his mark after a battling through to his first final.

The qualifier said: "I'm thrilled to bits to be in my first final but it was a real struggle out there.

"I had a bit of luck, but then I've had plenty of bad luck over my career so I think it evens itself out, but I'm happy to have some.

"To be honest, for three years in my head I've been expecting to come to events and win them, so it's good to get to a final at last."

Selby, last season's Masters and Welsh Open champion, said: "Obviously I'm very disappointed to lose from 4-1 up.

"Ricky didn't perform up to that point but after that he played a lot better."

Shanghai Masters - O'Sullivan overcomes Maguire

Ronnie O'Sullivan was close to his sparkling best with victory over Stephen Maguire securing him a place in the final of the Shanghai Masters.

The world champion pocketed two century breaks and three more of over 50 in an impressive 6-5 victory over his Glaswegian opponent.

And with yet another win the Rocket will now face Ricky Walden, a surprise qualifier from Flintshire, in Sunday's showcase final - which will see the winner of the best-of-19 frame contest pocket £52,000.

World number one O'Sullivan said: "It's good to be in the final because it was a tough match.

"I didn't play as well as I can but Stephen made it tough for me, so it was nice to win those last two frames and get over the line.

"It was tough at times out there, I couldn't seem to find any rhythm, but my 145 in the last frame was a good way to finish the match.

"I'm looking forward to playing Ricky in the final, he must be playing well this week to have got this far."

Maguire was the better starter and a break of 69 saw the world number two win the opening frame of the pair's semi-final clash.

But O'Sullivan restored parity with a 74 break and then edged 2-1 ahead after winning a scrappy third frame.

Last season's Crucible champion looked to be heading for 3-1 interval lead, but he faulted and Maguire pinched the frame on the final black ball to level proceedings.

The Scot won the first frame following the resumption, before O'Sullivan produced a cool break of 141 to make it 3-3.

Maguire fired in a 101 to edge ahead again - only for the Chigwell cueman to draw level once again.

A break of 76 moved Maguire to within one frame of victory, but his opponent was not to be denied and he followed a break of 87 in the 10th frame with the 145 clearance to secure his place in the final.

Maguire explained afterwards: "Ronnie is a great player and he's capable of turning it on when he wants.

"I had my chances, but to be honest there wasn't much I could do in those last two frames.

"It's disappointing not to have reached the final, but fair play to Ronnie because he played well, especially under pressure in those last two frames."
