O'Sullivan and Harold reach final

World number one Ronnie O'Sullivan reached the Northern Ireland Trophy final in Belfast with a thrilling 6-5 victory over Ali Carter.

The 'Rocket' overcame the aggressive Carter despite trailing for much of the match, which was a repeat of the World Championship final earlier this year.

O'Sullivan will play fellow Englishman Dave Harold, who stunned two-time world champion John Higgins 6-4.

Harold last made a ranking final 15 years ago when he won the Asian Open.

"I was so glad to get over the line, I was desperate in the end," said Harold, who led 5-1 at one stage.

"I played so well to go 5-1 up, I was dictating the match. Then I missed a black (at 30-0) and the whole match swung. He started having the run of the balls, which I had been getting earlier. I missed a couple in the first four frames and played a few bad positional shots, but Dave played brilliantly to go 5-1 up and deserved to win

John Higgins

"When he got me angled (on the last red at 68-33 in the 10th frame) I thought the gods were against me, but I managed to hit the red, which was a tough shot.

"I didn't feel any nerves early on but there's no doubt I did towards the end. I think I was entitled to do so after 14 years.

"I can relax now and enjoy the final. I've played him (O'Sullivan) at least 10 times and never beaten him, it's always been one of my ambitions to beat him so I could kill two birds with one stone."

Higgins, the world number five, was shocked by his defeat, but praised the way his opponent played.

"It's disappointing to lose at the semi-final stage, it would have been great to the start the season with a final," said the Scot.

"I missed a couple in the first four frames and played a few bad positional shots, but Dave played brilliantly to go 5-1 up and deserved to win."

O'Sullivan also hailed Harold's performance, saying: "Dave's done brilliantly to get to the final. He's had a hard draw."

O’Sullivan Triumphs In Belfast Classic

Ronnie O'Sullivan won an exceptional match 6-5 against Ali Carter tonight to reach the final of the Northern Ireland Trophy.

After ten terrific frames the Rocket was first among the balls in the decider but on 52 he had to play safe.

Carter looked composed as he steadily built a reply, but on 51 with the final red on the bottom cushion he rattled it in the jaws to allow O'Sullivan a second chance. He dished to claim the win and give himself a chance to win back to back ranking events.

"I was surprised to get a second chance, I was surprised that I didn't clear up to be honest. I thought here we go, one shot and he gets the reds open so I had to play an attacking safety. I did a good safety but when he got in I expected the worst.

"You have to, you wouldn't expect a player of Ali's calibre to miss with the balls open. It wasn't an easy shot down the rail a bit twitchy but I'd much rather be playing it than sitting there watching," admitted the World No.1.

Despite the level of performance from both players, O'Sullivan is still searching for improvments in his game.

"I suppose it was alright to watch for he fans, a few centuries, a few winning breaks but being professional as we are you're obviously wondering why there were so many big breaks and how they came about.

"A lot of them were elementary mistakes, which is unforgiveable at this level," he added.

After his emphatic victory the last time these two players met in the World Championship final in May when O'Sullivan recorded an 18-6 win this was a very different clash.

Seven frames were secured in one visit and there were 11 breaks of over fifty as both players scored heavily.

O'Sullivan has an impressive record, 20 ranking titles from 29 finals. Carter made his significant break-through in Sheffield reaching his first ranking event final. There was
never more than a frame between them as the fans were treated to top snooker.

The Rocket was quickly in the groove with a 96 in the first frame of their semi-final. Tiptree's Carter responded by taking the next two, frame three was secured with a break of 106 after a re-rack. O'Sullivan levelled at the break with a 69.

The high scoring encounter continued after the interval, Carter struck first with a 97 to move in front for the second time in the match. They traded breaks, O'Sullivan hitting 60 and a 108, Carter a 72.

A missed black, left in the jaws of the pocket, cost O'Sullivan frame nine as Carter compiled a break of 76 to move to within sight of victory. The drama was not over yet, the Chigwell cueman hit back with 78 to set up that a tremendous conclusion.

The 32-year-old now faces Dave Harold in tomorrow's final, "Dave's done brilliant to get to the final. He's had a hard draw, beating Graeme Dott, Stephen Lee, Stephen Maguire and John Higgins. Anyone who beats John Higgins knows there way around the table.

"I like a battle, tonight was a good match but everytime Ali got in I expected him to clear up whereas with Dave he won't try and split the pack and win frames, he goes about it differently," said O'Sullivan looking ahead to his thirtieth ranking final.

Ja sam nov ljubitelj snooker-a i imam neke nedoumice. Da li bi ste mogli da mi kazete kada je kraj igre i da li je mozda igra vremenski ogranicena kao i partije? Danas je mec bio prekinut nakon rezultata 6:1 za Roni-a i sada je ponovo nastavljen. Zasto? Hvala unapred. :)

O’Sullivan Sets Titles Target

Ronnie O'Sullivan said he believes he can reach 30 ranking titles, after taking his 21st at the Northern Ireland Trophy.

The Rocket saw off Dave Harold 9-3 in the final at the Belfast Waterfront to win his third ranking tournament within the past nine months.

Stephen Hendry's record of 36 crowns is surely out of sight, but Chigwell's 32-year-old O'Sullivan feels he can surpass Steve Davis' total of 28. "I should be able to get past that. I have thought about it, and seven more is not that many," he said.

"It would be nice to get to 30 if I play long enough. My form is much more consistent than it has been in the past. I still go missing for a couple of frames, but then I put in four or five good ones."

O'Sullivan added that his new level of consistency has been achieved through alterations to his cue action which have been ongoing for several years. "It's down to the technical work I've been doing with (coach) Frank (Adamson) since 2001," said the 888.com World Champion and world No 1. "There are still things that I'm working on but I'll keep it to myself what they are.

"I was frustrated for a long time and I've worked with a lot of different coaches so there's a message there somewhere. Sometimes I wanted to give it up, but I stuck in there. Last year I started playing well in practice and enjoying it, I found something that I felt could last. I've showed in winning this tournament that it's no fluke, I've hit the ground running this season."

As for the match against Harold, O'Sullivan said: "It was workmanlike, I played well in patches and I felt strong. From 1-0 down I got on top of him and won a few good frames. For the first four frames tonight it wasn't there, I was disappointed not to nail it. Then in the last frame I started thumping the balls in again, and I felt like I wanted to keep playing so it's a shame it ended.

"I came here just hoping to win a couple of matches, so I'm delighted to have won the tournament. Usually I aim to start playing well around December in time for the UK and the Masters, so it's great to blow the cobwebs away this early in the season."

Harold failed to add to his 1993 Asian Open title but was still pleased with his week's work. "I've got a lot of positives to take away from the tournament," said the 41-year-old from Stoke. "I've done my ranking the world of good and I've shown that I'm still around and I can beat the top players. I can keep this form going and get better, and I hope it won't be another 14 years before I get to a final.

"I could have gone 2-0 up today, but after that I let it slip. I thought 6-1 in the first session was a bit of an injustice, it could have been 5-2 or 4-3. Ronnie is just a class player, he punishes you every time. As a pure player and an entertainer, he's the best ever. He made a clearance in the seventh frame that was 50-1, he's the only one in the world who could have done that. He mesmerises you sometimes and it's hard not to get sucked in.

"I still enjoyed it, but I never really got going and I missed more easy balls than I have done all week."

Northern Ireland Trophy - Ronnie eases to title

The world champion and number one beat Stoke's Dave Harold 9-3 at the Waterfront Hall.

It was O'Sullivan' s 21st ranking title in a glittering career and one which saw him rewrite the record books - the crowd favourite became the first player for four years to win back-to-back ranking titles.

It was he who was the last player to achieve the feat when in 2004 he won the World Championship and Grand Prix.

Harold, the world number 28, can rightly be proud of his progress to this year's final, but he was well beaten by the tournament favourite.

O'Sullivan won £30,000 as this year's worthy winner, while Harold claimed £15,000 as runner-up.

It was always going to be difficult for Harold to fight back having trailed 6-1 after the afternoon session.

But the 41-year-old, whose last ranking title came 15 years ago when he won the 1993 Asian Open, gave a spirited display and even had the chance of a memorable maximum 147 break.

However, the Trent Vale player missed a pot on a black whilst on a break of 81 and his hopes of claiming the high-break prize disappeared.

It was Harold who won the opening frame of the match, but O'Sullivan quickly found top gear and raced into a five-frame lead.

And although Harold rallied in the concluding evening session, it was the 'Rocket' who won the first ranking event of the new season.

O'Sullivan had match breaks of 68, 103, 84, 76 and 64 to triumph.

(re-opens) O'Sullivan said afterwards: "I played okay in patches and I was decent in patches.

"I got on top of Dave after the first frame, but the first four frames tonight I wasn't there.

"I wanted to blow away a few cobwebs at this tournament, but to win it is a nice bonus.

"I'm still working on a few things technically, but there's still a few things I can improve on."

Harold moves up to number 14 in the rankings after his successful run in Belfast.

"I started well, won the first frame and then I could have won the second frame. But I let it slip after that," he said.

"Ronnie's a class player, he punishes you every time you make a mistake.

"As a pure player and a entertainer, he's the best ever.

"Hopefully it won't be another 14 years until my next final."

sledeci Ronijev protivnik,Peri,pobedjuje posrnulog Stivensa

sutra druga polovina

Nista od ovoga nisam stigla da gledam. Hehe vidi, vidi Karter i Vilijams treba da igraju. A Stivens je sve slabiji i to sam primetila odkako je Hanter umro. Cula sam da su bili najbolji drugovi.
