Champ Dale Falls To Davis

Dominic Dale's reign as Roewe Shanghai Masters champion was ended by Steve Davis today as the Nugget edged a 5-4 win to reach the last 16.
Dale trailed 4-2 before mounting a spirited challenge and forcing a decider, but it was Davis who came through to snatch the win.

A professional now for 30 years, Davis has slipped out of the top 16 and now faces a final qualifying round for each event. Perhaps as a result of the extra matches, he has found some form and still clearly enjoys the game that has brought him so many rewards.

"I'm very pleased to get through, especially after having good chances to win 5-2 and messing them up," admitted 51-year-old Davis.

The six-times World Champion had drawn level at the interval having lost the opening two frames and then pulled away, a 66 helping to make it 4-2. But with the line in sight he couldn't close out the match and the defending champion closed the gap. However, in the final frame runs of 33 and 54 put Davis into the next round.

Questioned on how snooker has changed during his career, he replied: "When I started playing it was a very careful game, players didn't take risks. But now it's much more aggressive. I've had to change my game.

"It's very hard to put into words now that I'm the grand-father of the game. If anyone had said I'd still be playing after 30 years, I'd have been very surprised but I am still enjoying it."

John Higgins survived a fierce comeback from Tom Ford to squeeze home in the deciding frame of their first round match.

"I was lucky today, I was 3-0 in front and could have gone 4-0 up after Tom had a very good chance of a 147. He came out very strongly to make it 3-2, should have made it 3-3 then did well to come back to 4-4," said the two-times World Champion.

The Scot had led 3-0 assisted by an 84 in frame two before Ford got on the board. The Leicester player reduced his deficit further after the interval but Higgins showed all his break-building qualities when he knocked in a 136.

Ford was not over-awed and replied with 55 and 100 to level and send the match into the final frame. He couldn't maintain his momentum and Higgins prevailed to set up a last 16 match with either Ryan Day or Chinese star Liang Wenbo.

Higgins has been in China for several days now undertaking some promotional work with title sponsor Roewe and looks to be settled. "The fans and the public have been first class and it's always nice to play in front of people who are so appreciative," he added.

Mark Selby booked his last 16 place with a 5-1 defeat of Bristol star Judd Trump.

A high scoring encounter saw Selby strike first with an 88 before Trump levelled. After that the teenager barely got a look-in as Selby compiled four more fifty plus breaks to race to victory. Runs of a 105, 85, 75 and 75 saw the Jester from Leicester through.

"I didn't really miss a ball and I made 70 plus in every frame. Judd didn't play badly, I just never gave him a chance. I've never played him before so I didn't really know what to expect other than that he's a dangerous player," said the World No 4 who now awaits the winner of the match between Mark King and Jimmy White.

Selby clearly enjoys China, a semi-finalist in the two ranking events here last season, he also reached the final of the invitational Jiangsu Classic in June.

Trump, who has made the venue stage of the first three ranking events of the season, was left with little table time. "Mark played very well, every time I came to the table I was snookered or left on the back rail," he said.

Joe Perry lost the first frame of his first round match against Matthew Stevens but then won the next five to ease through 5-1. A scrappy match was brought to life after the interval as Perry knocked in breaks of a 105 and 51 to seal victory.

Unlucky Break For Dott

Graeme Dott has withdrawn from the Roewe Shanghai Masters after breaking a bone in his left arm during a friendly football match on Tuesday evening.
The former 888.com World Champion was taking part in a kick-around organised by a few of the players when the injury occurred.

Dott received hospital treatment last night and will fly back to the UK on Thursday before under-going an operation. The world No 13 from Larkhall in Scotland hopes to recover in time for the Royal London Watches Grand Prix at the SECC in Glasgow - his first round game is scheduled for October 12.

Jamie Cope was due to play Dott tonight at the Shanghai Grand Stage but instead receives a bye to the last 16.

O'Sullivan progresses in Shanghai

O'Sullivan is aiming to win his third successive ranking event

World champion Ronnie O'Sullivan saw off Stuart Pettman in the first round of the Shanghai Masters - but defending champion Dominic Dale is out.

O'Sullivan was matched by Pettman, the world number 62, in the early stages and was level at 2-2 before breaks of 73, 60 and 86 gave him a nervy 5-2 win.

Dale, the world number 32, was pipped 5-4 by Steve Davis.

And fellow veteran Jimmy White's good run of form was ended by Mark King, who triumphed 5-4.

O'Sullivan is aiming to clinch his third successive ranking event title but was given a tougher than expected test by Pettman, who came through Monday's wildcard round.

"I felt nervous to begin with because I want to do well in this tournament," O'Sullivan said.

"The people in China have been good to me so I owe them something. I felt under pressure to win. Maybe I need to relax and enjoy it more."

Dale, the world number 32, went 2-0 up against Davis but soon found himself 4-2 down before forcing a decider.

It was Davis who came out on top, thanks to a break of 54 in the ninth frame, and he will play either Ding Junhui or Dave Harold in the last 16 on Thursday.

Elsewhere, world number four Mark Selby claimed a stunning win over 19-year-old Judd Trump 5-1 thanks to breaks of 88, 105, 85, 75 and 75.

Selby said: "I didn't miss a ball and had a 70-plus break in every frame. It's the first time I've played Judd so I didn't really know what to expect other than he's a dangerous player.

"I reached the semi-finals here last year and would like to go one better. I enjoy coming to China in general and really enjoy the support here."

But seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry lost at the first hurdle, going down 5-4 to Flintshire's Ricky Walden.

"There's no excuse, I just didn't play well enough to win. It's as simple as that," Hendry explained. "I just have to keep working hard and hope the results come."

Australia's Neil Robertson beat Ireland's Fergal O'Brien 5-2, world number five John Higgins beat Tom Ford 5-4 and Joe Perry beat Matthew Stevens 5-1.

Selby And Walden To Meet In Semis

Mark Selby reached the semi-finals of the Roewe Shanghai Masters for the second consecutive year and will now meet Ricky Walden, who is through the last four of a ranking event for the first time.

Walden secured his first semi-final by beating veteran Steve Davis 5-2.

"It was a tough game, I'm thrilled to get through as Steve is a class player and made it very tough. I'm playing well enough to win the event but I've got a semi-final first," said Walden.

The Flintshire potter took a while to settle and Davis took full advantage moving into a two frame lead. Walden, age 25, got on the board with runs of 53 and 71 to pull level at the interval.

After the break, a 65 paved the way towards securing frame five and the turning point came in the next frame. Having made 65, the Nugget was faced with a long red to the green pocket but couldn't convert his chance. Walden, still with plenty of work to do, crafted a 58 break to take the frame and move within one of victory.

He duly secured that in the next with a superb break of 139 to set-up a clash with Selby.

Davis said: "If someone had said to me before the tournament that I'd get to the quarter-finals I'd have taken it, though the semis would have been better.

"Ricky is a great player and he's in form. I thought I played competitively but I did two things wrong. I made a bad decision with the miss on the blue and then in the next frame Ricky was lucky with the pink when he missed in one pocket and it ran across the table into the other. But it hasn't been a bad tournament for me."

Selby also had to forge a come-back, he trailed Marco Fu 3-1 at the interval but found another gear after the break to take the next four frames.

"I knew it would be tough as Marco is a world class player. I was just rubbish before the interval but when I got the chances after the break I was able to take them," said the Masters and Welsh Open champion.

"I'm really happy to be in the semi-finals, I didn't play as well today as my two earlier matches. Marco kept it tight and didn't give me any chances but after the break I played much better," admitted the World No.4.

In fact Selby took the first frame with a 77 but couldn't build on that start. Royal London Watches Grand Prix Champion Fu hit back with 78 and 52 to move into a 3-1 lead at the break.

The Jester from Leicester found his form after the interval and runs of 64, 85 and 56 sealed his win. This is his third consecutive ranking event semi-final appearance in China having reached the semis in Shanghai and Beijing last season, and he will hope to go further this time.

"I led 3-1 but the problem happened in the fifth frame. I didn’t pot the pink when I was leading by about fifty points. If I’d have won that frame I would have had a better chance of winning the match, so it’s a pity.

"Now I have to get my form and focus back. My opponents didn’t play so well in the first two matches but I need to improve for the Grand Prix," said Fu who is already focusing on the Royal London Watches Grand Prix.
