The airlift of arms into Eastern Europe to help Ukraine’s out-gunned defence against Russian invasion seemed to enter a new phase this week.
Long-range artillery, armoured vehicles and other heavy weaponry were increasingly being assigned to the manifests of military-aid flights swooping into the region.
There have been other signs of hope, too, for Ukraine in recent days.

One prominent U.S. lawmaker even raised the spectre of actual military involvement by American forces. A former diplomat says NATO should begin now the process of ushering Ukraine into the alliance .
More common are calls to increase and speed up delivery of heavy weapons, for Germany to end its reluctance to supply such hardware and for it and other European countries to wean themselves of Russian gas and oil soon — even if doing so inflicts economic pain.
