The US military was surprised by the timing and swiftness of the Russian military's move into South Ossetia and is still trying to sort out what happened, a US defense official said Monday.

Russian forces surged into the breakaway region last week after weeks of clashes, threats and warnings between Tblisi and Moscow which culminated August 6 in a two-day Georgian offensive into South Ossetia.

That the two countries were on a collision course was no surprise to anyone, but the devastating Russian response was not expected, officials said.

"We were tracking it earlier in that week and we knew that things were escalating," said a military official, who asked not to be identified. "I can tell you it moved quicker than we anticipated that first day."

Sakašvili: Gruzija prepolovljena

Tbilisi -- Gruzijski predsednik Mihail Sakašvili tvrdi da je ruska vojska preuzela deonicu autoputa koji povezuje zapad i istok Gruzije.

Sakašvili je na vanrednoj sednici vlade, koju su prenosile televizije, rekao da je Rusija "praktično blokirala Gruziju iz vazduha, mora i kopna" i "uzela pod kontrolu značajan deo gruzijske teritorije", preneo je Itar-Tas, dodajući da gruzijski predsednik nije precizno označio o kojoj deonici se radi.

Prema rečima Sakašvilija, sada se radi o gubitku nezavisnosti same Gruzije, prenela je agencija RIA Novosti.

Prethodno je zamenik ministra inostranih poslova Gruzije Grigol Vašadze rekao da su ruski vojnici zauzeli gruzijsku aviobazu Senaki u zapadnoj Gruziji, ka kojoj se "kreće kolona sa ruskom tehnikom".

Posmatrači UN potvridili su da su ruske trupe ušle na teritoriju Gruzije iz separatističke oblasti Abhazije, izjavio je pomoćnik generalnog sekretara UN za mirovne operacije Edmond Mulet.

Mulet je rekao agenciji Rojters da su posmatrači svetske organizacije bazirani u Abhaziji potvrdili da su ruske trupe zauzele vojnu bazu Senaki unutar Gruzije.

To je po njemu prva nezavisna potvrda o tome da se ruske snage kreću u oblastima Gruzije izvan separatističkih teritorija Abhazije i Južne Osetije.

"Ovde se radi o ruskim trupama, ne mirovnim snagama", rekao je Mulet.

Buš upozorava Moskvu zbog invazije

Vašington, Brisel, Moskva -- Predsednik SAD Džordž Buš rekao da je vreme da Rusija zaustavi krizu u Gruziji, zbog dramatične i brutalne eskalacije nasilja.


Obraćajući se javnosti povodom sukoba u Gruziji, Buš je preko televizije u oštrom upozorenju Moskvi rekao da Rusija mora da se vrati s puta "kojim je izgleda krenula", kao i da "akcije Rusije dovode u opasnost njene odnose sa SAD-om i Evropom".

"Rusija je izvršila invaziju na suverenu susednu državu i ugrožava demokratsku vladu koju je izabrao narod te države. Takve akcije su neprihvatljive u 21. veku", rekao je Buš.

Takođe je ukazao da izgleda da Rusija želi da sruši legalno izabranu gruzijsku vladu i pozvao Moskvu da kao prvi korak prihvati primirje i povuče trupe.

On je rekao da postoje dokazi da bi ruske strane uskoro mogle da počnu da bombarduju civilni aerodrom u Gruziji. "Ako su ti izveštaji tačni, te aktivnosti Rusije bi predstavljale dramatičnu i brutalnu eskalaciju sukoba u Gruziji", upozorio je Buš.
