The feast after the fast
Muslims mark Ramadan's end with family, food, fellowship and prayer

Kareem Irfan greeted his sister-in-law, her husband and their 11-year-old daughter as they entered his Naperville house Nov. 3.

Irfan's in-laws made a special trip from their home in Chesterton, Ind., to be there this evening. They came bearing gifts, which were placed in front of the fireplace along with the other presents that lay in brightly colored gift bags.

For Muslims, Nov. 3 was Eid-al-Fitr, the last day of Ramadan. Eid, the festival of breaking fast, is one of the most joyous holidays in the Muslim world.

During the 30 days of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the day. Ramadan is a serious time for prayer, reading the Quran and self-examination.

Each evening during Ramadan, Irfan and other area Muslims gathered in nearby mosques in DuPage County to listen to an imam or religious leader chant the Quran in Arabic. During the course of the month, the entire Quran is recited out loud.

Quran's beginning

Ramadan is significant because it commemorates when Allah first revealed the Quran or Muslim Bible to Muhammad. Muslims believe that Muhammad is the greatest of God's prophets.

During Eid, usually celebrated for three days, Muslims express their joy at the blessings God has given them during Ramadan. Muslims dress in their finest clothes, gather with family and friends, partake in special meals and exchange gifts.

"Eid is a time for happiness, thanksgiving and good food," said Irfan, a lawyer with Square D Company in Palatine. "It is a sin for a Muslim to fast on Eid."

There was no danger of any one fasting or going hungry at the Irfan residence.

Because Irfan, his wife and in-laws are originally from India, Indian foods filled a counter in the kitchen.

"We call this our Indian feast," said Irfan, who wore a kurta — a long tunic-like shirt.

The family and guests helped themselves to biryani — flavored rice with lamb and green beans — and chicken kabob.

After the meal they went down to the basement to pray. Muslims are required to pray five times a day throughout the year.

Then they climbed upstairs for the most enjoyable part of the evening — exchanging gifts in the living room.

Good-natured gifts

A string of colored lights adorned the mantle of the fireplace. Beneath the mantle stood a row of gift bags, gleaming in the light.

"Shua, you are the youngest. You must open your presents first," said Asma Ahmed, the girl's mother and Irfan's sister-in-law.

The girl reluctantly grabbed one of the bags and pulled out a painted bowl made by her cousin.

"Zuhair, go open your present," said his mother, Rana Irfan.

Zuhair took one of the bags to his chair, pulled out an object wrapped in tissue paper, opened the paper and took out a pair of sunglasses.

The room shook with laughter and clapping as he put the glasses on his face, giving him a movie star allure.

"Now it's my turn," said Irfan, pulling out his gift and holding up a sweater. "It's just what I want. And it's in my size, too. Small!"

Irfan's joke was met with shouting and laughter, as his body is anything but small.

Meanwhile, Maimoona Khan of Glen Ellyn, also of Indian descent, went to a potluck dinner at her mother's house in Glen Ellyn. That morning she went to the Eid prayer service at a mosque in Villa Park. After the service, people embraced and wished one another well.

"Eid is a happy time for Muslims," Khan said. "But I also feel an ache in my heart at the end of Ramadan because it was a time that brought us closer to God and to each other."

Najam Kazi of Wheaton invited 20 people to her Eid celebration. For the first time, she prepared leg of lamb for her Eid dinner.

Kazi, originally from India, said that this year the joy she usually felt at Eid was marred by the Oct. 8 earthquake in Pakistan.

"A lot of people were killed, and I felt sad by that, even though the spirit of Eid is still there for me."

We love the suet,
We love the suet,
We love the suet,
and suet loves us !
Tallow, tallow,
sweet lamb tallow,
after Ramadan fast,
sweetly flowing down my mouth
We love the suet,
We love the suet,
We love the suet,
and suet loves us,
Tallow for breakfast,
Tallow for lunch,
Tallow for dinner
on and on,
I enjoy being so humble
until I gain the grace of Allah !
