Zbog sprečavanja malokrvnosti, lekari preporučuju unos gvožđa putem jedenja mesa, ali to gvožđe, tzv. gvožđe iz hema, je dokazano da je kancerogeno (Mr sc med. D. Ivanov). Gvožđe iz biljne hrane lakše se apsorbuje od gvožđa iz mesa, jer vitamin C koji je prisutan isključivo u biljnoj hrani ima ključnu ulogu u njegovom prebacivanju iz creva u krv.
