Torres: "I am in debt to the Chelsea fans"

Spanish forward admits to early "difficulties" at Stamford Bridge but says he will not give up in his pursuit of a return to the form that saw him command a £50 million fee

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres says he is determined to repay the fans who have supported him through his difficult start to life at the club.

Torres has scored just three Premier League goals since his £50 million switch from Liverpool in January but says he will not give up in his quest to return to form.

"All that I need to do, above anything else, is to work," he told the Daily Mirror.

"If you work and give everything and really want to do something, that is all you can be asked.

"If you do that and things do not work out, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

"But I am in debt to the Chelsea fans. They have always supported me.

"And I promise them the one thing I have never done and will never do in my life is give up."

The Spain international went 903 minutes without scoring after joining Chelsea, and has found the net only twice in eight Premier League matches this season.

He remains insistent, however, that he can get back to his best.

"Whenever you go somewhere new, you expect to have difficulties," he said.

"But whenever I have had difficult times, I look at myself and say, 'Yes, I can get back to my level.'"

Fernando Torres: Liverpool fans don't know the truth about my transfer to Chelsea

Spain striker expects to be on the receiving end of plenty of abuse when the Reds visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but insists he holds no grudges ahead of the "very special game"

Fernando Torres insists Liverpool fans do not know the full story behind his transfer to Chelsea.

The Spain international is a less than popular figure on Merseyside due to his £50 million switch to London in the January transfer window.

Torres was roundly booed during Spain's defeat to England at Wembley last week and he expects it to be in the firing line from the away fans at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but says that his former club's supporters will always be special to him.

"I've no doubt [the abuse] will be a lot worse," Torres told Marca.

"The Liverpool fans have only paid attention to what the club made them see and they don't know the true story of my transfer to Chelsea.

"That's why I don’t hold any grudges; they will always be special to me."

Torres became a Kop idol for his lethal form during his first three seasons with the club, scoring 56 Premier League goals in just 79 appearances while playing under Rafael Benitez.

But when the Spanish manager was replaced by Roy Hodgson, his form dipped and it has not fully recovered since his move to the capital.

"Nobody has understood me like Rafa Benitez," he said.

"I owe him a lot. He is a fantastic coach. His teams go out on to the pitch with just one aim: to compete.

"The sensation they transmit is that, with less [of a] budget, they can beat the biggest teams."

The 27-year-old will be hoping to show something like his best form when Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with the player acknowledging the importance of the fixture as Chelsea look to stay in the title race.

Torres' former club have picked up only one win in their last four Premier League matches, but the forward believes that they are heading in the right direction.

"[Liverpool] are a team in transition and the change doesn't come overnight," he said.

"They need time. They have made a significant investment and, like in any project, they need to establish themselves.

"We can't allow ourselves the luxury of losing any more points. It will be a very special game and atmosphere, too, without a doubt."

With only two Premier League goals this season, Torres has not caught fire in a Chelsea shirt yet but dismissed concerns that he was feeling the pressure of his transfer fee and insisted he remains optimistic about his future.

"You place the responsibility on yourself, it's something you can't control," he said.

"Also, how much I cost doesn't depend on me, it's the clubs who decide what they are willing to pay and it is they who come to an agreement.

"I have been lucky enough to experience many wonderful situations over the last 10 years, but I am confident the best is yet to come."

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas: Fernando Torres is worth £50m & I would pay that for him now

The Blues manager insists that the Spaniard has picked up his form compared to last season and suggests that he is happy with the former Liverpool star's contribution to the team

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has refused to criticise Fernando Torres despite the striker’s lack of goals since arriving at Stamford Bridge and says "I’d pay the same today" for the 27-year-old.

The £50m striker has only five goals to his name since joining the club at the beginning of this year and is set to face his former team Liverpool on Sunday.

"Of course he is worth the money," said the Chelsea boss, according to the Daily Mirror. "Of course I would pay that now. You talk about his record but when you do that you are isolating two years to vent your opinion-making.

"Instead, isolate the last four months with the goals he’s scored.

"He’s there to perform and create – creating opportunities is important, whether you win or lose games.

"At the moment, our best scorers are our two midfielders [Frank Lampard and Ramires]. For them to finish, someone is creating. The team is, so I’m happy at the moment.

"I think Fernando has picked up from last season, not only with his form, but also his availability and movement for the team.

"He is back to his old sharpness and also in goalscoring terms. We’re pretty happy with the way he’s performed."

After it was pointed out that Torres only had scored four goals in 12 appearances this season, Villas-Boas replied: "It’s not bad. A striker is not just there to put the ball in the net.

"It has to do with confidence and how you feel and relate to the team. Strikers live on moments of confidence. I’m sure, with ours as good as they are, they’ll eventually get it.

"When a precise year goes better for you, you look for the good things you did. Those good things inspire you in your own way, in a person’s life or as a player.

“You have better moments or worse moments. At the moment, Fernando’s best days were the Liverpool days. But that’s not to say those days won’t arrive at this club."

Chelsea have suffered from a slight dip in form of late and the Villas-Boas has urged his team to get back to winning ways.

"It’s important the team returns to the good standard we set in the beginning," he added.

"We came back with a good result against Blackburn at a pitch where Arsenal had lost, so it’s important to continue to win."
