The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, believes that the EU's goal now should be "zeroing the supply of gas, oil, coal and nuclear fuel from Russia." The final stage should be a complete cessation of methane purchases from the Russian Federation.
In an interview with the newspaper il Messaggero , Metsola said that the European Parliament wants an immediate embargo on all Russian energy supplies. She also added that she was not afraid of Russia and that the European Union could not be blackmailed.
According to her, Russia "cannot be both a member of the international community and an aggressor who commits war crimes." The European Union, Metsola continued, must become immune to all incoming threats.
"This means diversifying our energy sources, investing more in renewable energy, adopting new and tougher sanctions against Russia and increasing our assistance to Ukraine while continuing to support our businesses and our citizens," the President of the European Parliament concluded.
The European Union previously announced its intention to reduce the need for oil and gas from Russia by the end of 2027 to zero , and by the end of this year, Brussels is going to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources by two-thirds. At the same time, the evolution of various packages of sanctions is likely to include the energy sector, the EU authorities said
