Rat u Gruziji

Poslednja izmena:
Hitler 1938, Putin 2008

Many Americans may not believe that the Russian invasion of Georgia is very important. Indeed, the majority of Americans probably can’t find Georgia on a map. However, this is probably the most important foreign policy challenge of George W. Bush’s presidency and the one with the greatest long-term consequences, for all one needs to do to see the danger of this action is to look at history. Those who do not know history, and George W. Bush is one of them, are condemned to relive it.

In 1938, after the West did nothing about the acquisition of Austria, Hitler demanded the annexation of the Sudetenland, an area of Czechoslovakia with a large ethnic-German population that Hitler claimed was being persecuted. Rather than go to war to protect the Czechs from Germany’s expansionist plans, Europeans, led by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, chose to appease Hitler by allowing the theft of the Sudetenland in return for a promise not to invade anyone else. America chose not to become involved in the matter as our foreign policy was one of isolation, promoted by the right-wing, large numbers of whom were sympathetic to Hitler. Within six months, Germany had acquired the rest of Czechoslovakia, minus small gifts of territory to Hungary and Poland. With an easy victory in the Saar, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, Hitler proceeded to make his famous pact with Russia in August 1939 and invade Poland in September, thus triggering the Second World War.

Today, Vladimir Putin’s Russia declares that Georgia is persecuting and attacking ethnic Russians in the Georgian territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and that this is the justification for his invasion of the sovereign territory of another country. Georgia is a pro-western democracy on the southern border of Russia, in the Caucasus Mountains, and has sought membership in NATO and close ties to the European Union. They are begging the West for help in defending themselves from the Russian invasion. Naturally, they are getting only words and, unfortunately, not even many of those.

As in 1938-39, Europe will do nothing. They import a large portion of their oil and natural gas from Russia and much of their trade is with Russia. Many of their banks and industrial concerns have large investments in Russia, (which they will eventually lose- look at the current difficulties BP is having with Russian investors attempting to steal BP’s Russian operations).. The Europeans are loathe to lose those investments and trade.

The United States is no longer isolationist, with the Right-Wing no longer espousing such a policy, but, thanks to the Neo-cons, embraces an interventionist policy. However, that intervention must be in countries that are easy to subdue (as Bush and the neo-cons thought Iraq would be) or provide opportunities for oil and profit (as Iraq has proven to provide). Without these conditions present in Georgia, Bush has no intention of risking the peace with Russia beyond offering token oral support to the poor Georgians.

However, there is another, more pathetic, reason America will not respond to this crisis- we can’t. After squandering a trillion dollars and killing four thousand courageous and heroic American soldiers in a war fought to build George W. Bush’s legacy as a great wartime President, we can’t respond to Russia’s invasion of Georgia. We don’t have the military strength to maintain the legitimate war in Afghanistan, the illegitimate war in Iraq, and provide a credible military deterrent for Georgia. Further, we don’t have the economic stomach to do so, either. Any disruption in the oil market, as would certainly happen if Russia turned off their own oil spigot, would severely worsen the recession America is already in and require a significant increase in the budget deficit for which we already owe trillions to China and Saudi Arabia.

Vladimir Putin is the most dangerous man in the world today, with his allies among the former KGB, many of whom now also run not only Russia’s most powerful corporations, but also it’s largest organized crime operations both in Russia and in Europe and America, he took advantage of Boris Yeltsin’s poor health and decline into alcoholic decrepitude to take power of the most unstable and dangerous nation in the world. He proceeded to abrogate large portions of the country’s constitution, to suppress the political freedoms Russian citizens had won after the collapse of Gorbachev’s Soviet Union, destroy the free news media, and crush any political opposition to Putin and his allies. Like Hitler, like Stalin, he has used xenophobia and nationalism to build support among the people.

I recently found myself in a debate over Russia with a businessman who was proud of his connections to the Republican Party here in America. He was criticizing me for my concerns about the murder of democracy in Russia. He maintains that Russians are happier now than ever because they can make money. Why should people concern themselves with trivialities like civil liberties when they have economic freedom, he declared. Having been a Republican once, I can see now why they behave the way do here in America and why we will not intervene in any meaningful way in this Russian invasion or any future Russian invasions. When a political party puts profits ahead of political freedom, when they consider economic freedom superior to political freedom, then the country gets neither. When the largest corporation in America, Wal-Mart, conducts the majority of its business with a nation (China) that still imprisons millions for political opposition and where slave labor is still frequently employed, even encouraged, then one can see why America will never meaningfully oppose the rebuilding of Russia’s empire until it is too late.

George W. Bush says he looked into Vladimir Putin’s eyes and saw a man he could work with. Somehow, that doesn’t surprise me, which is one reason why the Russian invasion of Georgia is such a terrible and significant event and why the world should be afraid, very afraid.

Jeeps and pick-up trucks filled with Georgian soldiers raced through the streets, their occupants frantically signalling to civilians that they too should flee. The road out of Gori towards Tbilisi was a scene of chaos and fear as cars jockeyed with tanks for a speedy escape.

Soldiers left by any means available. Dozens of troops clung to cars on the back of a transporter lorry, while five other soldiers fled on one quad bike.
