Vuk Draskovic, the leader of the Serbian Renewal Movement, and his influential wife, Danica, find themselves at a political crossroads, suddenly less radical than many of their supporters, their commitment to the ouster of President Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia called into question.
Having built a reputation as fierce and combative leaders of the opposition to Mr. Milosevic and his powerful wife, Mirjana Markovic, the Draskovics now have money, power, position and a lot to lose -- making them much like the tightly knit Milosevics themselves, whom they detest but to whom they are often compared.
The Draskovics control Belgrade, its many business opportunities and its powerful television station, Studio B -- all at the sufferance of Mr. Milosevic's Socialist Party.
And their efforts to find a peaceful way to oust Mr. Milosevic, to negotiate with him for new elections while trying to subvert him, has confused some of their followers and helped keep the opposition divided.
That was glaringly evident at a large anti-Milosevic rally on Thursday in Belgrade, which drew up to 100,000 people. When Mr. Draskovic realized how many had shown up, he felt compelled to crash the rally he had refused to attend.
The bearded Mr. Draskovic is normally a compelling orator, a kind of rock star.
