Shortage of Russian gas in Germany could lead to the shutdown of the world's largest chemical complex
06/28/2022 - 03:00
The leadership of the German chemical corporation BASF is considering the closure of the world's largest chemical complex in Lukwigshafen, Germany.
BASF is facing a shortage of raw materials and increased costs due to reduced Russian gas supplies, according to The Wall Street Journal.
“The cessation of production at this site will be a huge problem,” said BASF Senior Economist Peter Westerheide. “We have never encountered such situations before. It's hard to imagine."
According to BASF management, if the chemical complex receives more than 50% of the maximum volume of gas, the operation of the complex will be able to continue. But if the indicator falls below this mark, then the work of the complex will have to be stopped.
At the same time, the immediate suspension of the entire complex can cause critical damage to it and threaten significant security risks, writes WSJ
