The European Union (EU) will offer its gas importers a solution to avoid violating sanctions when buying fuel from Russia. And at the same time, the idea will allow fulfilling
Moscow 's new conditions on paying for gas in rubles. This was reported by
Bloomberg on May 14, citing sources.
According to the publication, in the new guidance on gas payments, the
European Commission (EC) plans to specify that companies must make a clear statement that they consider their obligations fulfilled when they pay in euros or dollars under existing contracts. The agency also notes that the
EU's executive body told governments in a closed session that management is not preventing companies from opening accounts with Gazprombank and will allow them to buy gas in line with EU sanctions.
“Another key point is that once the
European companies have made a payment in euros or dollars and have declared that they have fulfilled their obligations, no further action should be required from the Russian side regarding the payment,” the publication added.
A Bloomberg source also said that at that closed meeting, the opinions of government representatives were divided regarding the EC plan. According to the publication, supported the idea of Germany, Hungary, Italy and France. Poland has made "some legal clarity". Others were confused by the lack of specific instructions for opening accounts in rubles.
Earlier, on Thursday, May 12, Bloomberg also reported that
20 European companies have already opened accounts with Gazprombank to pay for Russian gas in accordance with Moscow's conditions. Currently, the number of customers who paid in rubles remains at four, as it was at the end of April. Payments from other buyers are due later this month.
Irina Anisimova, general director of the PR Partner communications agency, said in an interview with Izvestia that it is
unprofitable for Gazprom to disclose the names of companies that have accepted the conditions for paying for Russian gas in rubles so as not to put them in a negative light in the foreign media field and cooperation could be continued .
