NIGEL KENNEDY & KROKE (UK/POLAND)

*The rights for this music have sadly expired*
Despite all the 'bad boy of classical music' stuff which still clings to him with or without justification, Nigel Kennedy remains proof positive of the eternal precept that virtuosity without soul is worthless. The fact that his musical education was paid for by Yehudi Menuhin, who was also his first teacher, or that he has performed all the great violin works with all the greatest living conductors, or that his CD of Vivaldi's Four Seasons remains the most popular classical music CD in this island's history. All have their importance in record books and record company press releases, but it's Kennedy's determination to infuse a maximum amount of feeling into all he does, and break free from the often hidebound constrictions of the classical music world that really make him unique.
After releasing his own tribute to the music of Jimi Hendrix, Kennedy continues his wayward musical adventures by teaming up with Polish klezmer and folk maestros Kroke, whose music has already enthralled and seduced fans of the eastern European sounds the world over, including our very own Charlie Gillett .
'East Meets East', the CD which Kennedy and Kroke recorded together for EMI was nominated for a World Music award last year. Listening to it brings you close to the fundamental spirit of eastern European string music, upon which composers like Bartok , Beethoven and Mendelssohn built their towering bodies of work. Kennedy and Kroke bring that spirit to life with a passion, sensitivity and, yes, virtuosity that will leave you breathless.
