Iron Maiden

As previously reported, IRON MAIDEN vocalist Bruce ****ínson will release his first solo DVD, entitled Anthology, through Sanctuary Visual Entertainment oon June 19th in Europe and June 20th in North America. An in depth interview with Dickinson about the DVD footage is now available online at his official website. The following is a brief excerpt:

Q: Let’s begin by talking about ‘Dive Dive Live’, which was filmed at the Town And Country Club in California during your first solo tour. Was it a humbling experience to be back in the clubs when you’d become so accustomed to arenas, or a refreshing change?

Dickinson: "The entire tour was really refreshing. We had a great time. It’s a shame in a way that we didn’t film ‘Dive Dive Live’ in Europe, because some of those shows were cool. It was an odd video to make, frankly. I thought we’d have lots of hand-held cameras, but what turned up were all these great big cranes and flying jibs. Half the audience was excluded to make room for the camera tracks. It was really unsatisfactory. The budget was obscene and if I’d controlled it I could’ve made about three videos for the same price."

Q: I believe the audience that night wasn’t even allowed to drink?

Dickinson: "That’s right! They weren’t allowed to do anything. They were corralled in pens like cattle. It didn’t belong anywhere near a rock ‘n’ roll show."

Q: Was it a typical arms-crossed, hard-to-impress LA audience?

Dickinson: "Yeah. But the crowd was made miserable by being dry as a bone and bossed about by all these self-important video idiots, or vidiots as I like to call them."

Q: Despite all these reservations, would you say ‘Dive Dive Live’ is a decent representation of your first solo tour?

Dickinson: "No. It’s crap, but it’s the only documentation of the tour. At the end of the show, I went into the truck, got the 24-track master audiotapes and threw them in the river. The bloke who was with me, Merck Mercuriadis, was actually on his hands and knees recovering the tapes. I was like, ‘Let them drown you fucker’. These video wankers had come in and ruined what should have been a great night."

Q: While in California, did you experience much of the brain-dead rock star egomania that had inspired the song ‘Tattooed Millionaire’?

Dickinson: "[Laughs]. I don’t think you can avoid it. But fortunately MTV and VH1 televise it on a regular basis now. That Cribs show, I think, sums it all up."

Q: The Spanish footage was shot for a Japanese video EP, but what we get here is pretty much a full concert from the era. How did it make you feel to see it again?

Dickinson: "I thought it was pretty darned good, actually. The Skunkworks video was what ‘Dive Dive Live’ should have been. It also reminded me that there was a crisis at the second show when somebody stole my trousers."

Q: Er… stole your trousers?!

Dickinson: "Yeah. And being on a bit of a budget I only had one pair. They were black fake leather snakeskin. Where in Pamplona am I supposed to find a pair of those on a Sunday morning? We finally found some women’s disco diva shop that had a pair of stretchy PVC ones that I could just about get into. I noticed during the show that everyone down in the pit was staring anxiously up at me with a look of awe on their faces. I thought, ‘Well, we’re going down well tonight’. Then I realised that my pair of hairy bollocks had released themselves and were swinging around. The trousers had split! So I walked manfully off the stage. We were only about three songs in, so we used black Gaffer tape to cover me up. You’ve heard of the Brazilian wax, afterwards I had the Pamplona version. I suffer for my art!"

19/06/2006 IRON MAIDEN ANNOUNCE BRAND NEW STUDIO ALBUM

Iron Maiden plan to release their new studio album entitled A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, in early September.

The band started writing songs at the end of 2005 after a short break from their hugely successful festival appearances in Europe and the USA. After Christmas the songs were completed and rehearsed when the band then got together with producer Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley at Sarm West Studios in London to start work on recording the backing tracks.

Kevin Shirley has now co-produced three of the bands studio albums alongside Steve Harris, as well as two of their recent Live DVD's and albums. From this the working relationship between Kevin and the band seems to get stronger and stronger. Says Kevin, 'The Beast is back! I feel from the outset we all clicked on this one. We spent two months in the studio, from Go to Whoa - from Nicko's 'tubs up' to final mixes and sequenced master! That's a tiny gestation period for an album. Producing Iron Maiden is like sitting in the head and driving one of those mammoth automatons from Star Wars or Saturday morning cartoons! And there's nothing that can stop it!'

'I feel incredibly privileged to have been around to see this album born and breathe life. There have been only a couple of occasions in my career when the ENTIRE process of recording felt so complete - and it is on display here.'

As on previous projects all of the tracks were performed live and together in one room. No click tracks or computer tightening or manipulation has happened at any stage of the recording.

Says Steve Harris,' I think in many ways this has been the easiest album in terms of recording that we've ever done. The whole process of writing through to recording was very natural. I think in terms of the material we've also pushed our boundaries yet again and I think it will please our fans but also really surprise a lot of people as well. The sound we've managed to get is very powerful for a Maiden record and all of us have pushed ourselves in our own ways to create something that we're all immensely proud of and I think working as quickly as we did with Kevin really was part of that process. We simply can't wait to take this out on the road. We've played some great shows and had a lot fun recently introducing some of our older songs to a new generation of fans. However for us personally we're incredibly excited about getting out and performing these new tracks.'

Says Bruce Dickinson,'This album has to be our best since working with Kevin. There is such a wide scope of musicianship on this album and in parts this album is truly epic. I thought with the likes of Paschendale from the last studio album that we could only hope to surpass that but having now heard the album back as well as sitting with a few select people and hearing their reactions as well I truly believe we have managed it. Every one of us has put everything into this record and it's really paid off. However we've had such fun making it that it's almost difficult to believe what we've managed to achieve in the time it took.'

IRON MAIDEN will release their 14th studio album in September via EMI and Kerrang!/BW&BK scribe Dom Lawson was among the first to hear the new material.

Titled A Matter Of Life And Death, the album was recorded at Sarm West Studios in London with producer Kevin Shirley, who also worked on the last two Maiden albums, 2000’s Brave New World and 2003’s Dance Of Death.

Clocking in at a colossal 72 minutes, the album boasts ten tracks, all but three of which are over 6 minutes in length. The album will be preceded by a single, ‘The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg’, which will be released in mid August.

Dom reports that this is easily the strongest album Iron Maiden have produced since their ‘80s heyday. It is also by far the heaviest thing the band have ever recorded. Full of experimentation and unexpected detours into intense and atmospheric territory, it’s a complex and powerful set of songs that touch upon some dark subjects, most notably the horrors of war, the impact of religious fundamentalism and the threat of nuclear destruction.

The full tracklisting for A Matter Of Life And Death is as follows: ‘Different World’, ‘These Colours Don’t Run’, ‘Brighter Than A Thousand Suns’, ‘The Pilgrim’, ‘The Longest Day’, ‘Out Of The Shadows’, ‘The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg’, ‘For The Greater Good Of God’, ‘Lord Of Light’, ‘The Legacy’.

Dom spoke to frontman Bruce Dickinson and bassist/founder member Steve Harris about the new songs and how Iron Maiden have special plans
for their forthcoming European tour that kicks off on November 9th in Denmark and hits the UK in December.

“At the moment we’re thinking about playing the whole album live, back-to-back,” Dickinson reveals. “When you’ve got an album this good, it’s really important that you do something bold. If we can go out and do a whole album of brand new material, I think that we can give ourselves a pat on the back. Everyone will have heard the album upfront, and the songs will really come to life. I think it could be extraordinary.”

“Brave New World and Dance Of Death were both good records,” he continues. “But they weren’t anywhere near as good as this one! This one is Dance Of Death without the effort. This whole album feels effortless. It’s like driving a big gas-guzzling motor car. You just put your foot down and there’s limitless power under the bonnet.”

“Yeah, it’s been unbelievable,” agrees Steve Harris. “We booked the studio for three months, and we finished the whole thing in two! I think the preparation was good. We didn’t have the rows we usually have! (laughs) We really focused on each song and it was a very positive experience.”

Among the highlights of the new album are the opening track, ‘Different World’. The shortest song on the album at a mere four minutes, it’s a
classic, storming Maiden opener with an instantly memorable chorus and soaring guitar harmonies.

“It wasn’t intentional when we sat down and wrote it, but as soon as it was finished we thought ‘Thin Lizzy!’” laughs Steve Harris. “It’s a tribute to them, in a way. Obviously it sounds like Maiden, but it just conjured up that Thin Lizzy vibe.”

The second track on the album, ‘These Colours Don’t Run’, is a brooding, dramatic rumination on the plight of being a soldier in a war zone and
sets the tone for the dark epics that follow it.

“That song was an effort to put a human face on people who go out and fight wars,” says Dickinson. “They call it ‘peacekeeping’, but these people put themselves in harm’s way, and whether or not you agree with the reasons why they’re doing it, they’re just doing their job. Some of the new songs are quite angry. It’s just the times we’re living in. We’ve got global fundamentalism, state-sponsored terrorism, dirty bombs, global warming and everything else. I think this is our response to all of that.”

‘Brighter Than A Thousand Suns’ is arguably the heaviest track on the new album, and one with heavy subject matter to match.

“It’s about the atomic bomb,” says Dickinson. “The scientist that saw the first bomb go off said it was brighter than a thousand suns. The idea that human beings could bring about their own total destruction totally changed the way people thought.”

Finally, the first single from the new album, ‘The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg’, is an intricate seven-minute epic that starts with a creepy, ominous intro before erupting into a crushing, almost Led Zeppelin-esque riff and a powerful, emotive chorus. More obtuse lyrically than most of the album, it’s a curious, challenging choice for a single.

“It’s very different for us,” admits Harris. “It’s very riffy. The intro has an almost nursery rhyme eeriness. Sometimes you try to create a mood and sometimes it’s just <>. Everyone’s going to ask who Benjamin Breeg is, but you’ll just have to find out for yourself!”

Understandably, Steve Harris is extremely proud of the new record, particularly since it seems likely to be hailed as one of Maiden’s best. The band are currently as popular as they’ve ever been, so does he think Maiden can keep going indefinitely?

“Five years ago we were thinking about possibly retiring at this point, but now we’re at this stage there’s no way! Why should we?” he grins. “I don’t know why, but I always had it in my head that we’d do fifteen studio albums, so we’ve got at least one more to go!”
(Thanks: Kerrang!)
