Reaction: Mourinho - Friends more important than football
Saturday, Oct 14, 2006
The game lasted an almost unprecedented 102 minutes but it was only incidents at the very start and at the very end of the game that most people wanted to talk about after the final whistle. They were the injuries that left Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini in hospital.
Both Chelsea goalkeepers were carried off the pitch after collisions with Reading players. In the eyes of José Mourinho, they were vastly different.
“The second is a violent fall,” said the manager who had just seen his team gain three away points courtesy of a Reading own-goal. He attached little blame to Ibrahima Sonko who had collided with Cudicini.
“For me it is a fall for a yellow card. The way Carlo hits the ground was unlucky.
“But the first challenge is unbelievable,” he quickly added, moving onto the moment Steve Hunt’s knee struck Petr Cech.
“The goalkeeper grabs the ball, has the ball in his hands, slides because he dives and the pitch is wet, and the player goes direct for him.
“He cannot go for the ball and goes with his knee on his face. If he didn’t break a bone in his face, Cech is a lucky boy.
“I am not saying the intention was to send my player to hospital. That is something only the Reading player can say. He says that it was not intentional and I believe players. But it was a very stupid challenge and it was a challenge for a red card.
“In every game, you see players jumping over the keeper, players avoiding the keeper or going with the foot to the ball. But when the player goes with knee direct to the face, he doesn’t want to avoid.
“It is one for the authorities to look at in the same way they looked at Thatcher on Mendes.”
Mourinho confirmed that Cech was unconscious in the dressing room but had yet to receive exact details of either keeper’s injury. He was though prepared to state that Hilario would be handed the goalkeeper’s gloves for the Barcelona match.
Mourinho was also unhappy with what he thought a lack of contrition on Hunt’s behalf, highlighting the Reading player appearing to laugh and gee up his team-mates in the immediate aftermath to the incident.
Reading manager Steve Coppell defended his midfielder.
“There is no way Hunt went there to do damage,” he said. “The referee was ten yards away, he was in a great position to see the incident and he didn’t book him. Hunt was not laughing at anyone being injured. No-one in my team would laugh at an opponent being injured.”
Both Mourinho and Coppell had no complaints over the red cards their players received — John Obi Mikel for Chelsea on an inauspicious full Premiership debut, and Andre Bikey for Reading.
“Reading play football the way I like,” complemented Mourinho on the opponents’ overall game. “It is difficult football to play against and their public is amazing. The manager must be very good to have a team doing so well.”
There was only one thought in Mourinho’s head as he left the Madejski Stadium however.
“I care about my two friends. Barcelona is Barcelona, football is football. I care about it but for me there are more important things. I want them both out of the hospital.”
