Most of Britain's troops are to be pulled out of Bosnia to ease the overstretch of the armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The total British force in Bosnia is about 600 and the announcement of the withdrawal of British troops from there raised suspicions at Westminster that the Ministry of Defence was preparing to send more reinforcements to Afghanistan in addition to the battle group of 1,400 troops announced on Monday. However, that was denied by defence sources. British forces in Bosnia have been engaged in bomb disposal.
The shadow Defence Secretary, Liam Fox, said: „It's clear that as overstretch hits hard, the Government is having to scratch around to find anywhere from which it can withdraw troops to then send to Afghanistan.”
In a press conference yesterday, Tony Blair underlined his irritation with Nato allies for their refusal to answer demands made at the summit last year in Riga for more troops. „We are constantly pressing our Nato partners to do more. To be fair, some of them are. But it's important we continue to do that,'' he said.
The Commons Defence Select Committee will raise concerns about the impact of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on research and development in the armed forces with a report tomorrow
