Marc Lajhner diary from Gladius MMA training
[2006-03-27 21:09:35]

At Gladius MMA we now have a guest fighter that has come to Sweden and Gladius MMA to train MMA and really focus on traning. His name is Mark Lajhner and we will put his diary on our website.

We will publish his diary appoximatley 1 time a week, here is his diary from the first week and below is information about Marc.

21.03.2006. Tuesday

17.00 - MMA Class

A few hours after I arrived in Gothenburg I went to MMA Class with the elite group. We warmed up with SW sparring and I rolled with David Ristic and August Wallén. August destroyed me on the ground and I tapped many times. The class then consisted of technical and conditioning training. I already knew that Shooters fighting system covers all situations in MMA combat but didn't know that the conditioning was so intense and I didn't feel very well afterwards. I'm still not in shape but I'll soon get into the groove.

22.03.2006. Wednesday

10.00 - SW

Martin Janson and I scheduled a SW sparring session. I'm helping him prepare for his upcoming SW match against Bruno Carvalho and he is helping me with my ground game. After the fight I will be helping him with throws for BJJ. During sparring he tapped me out a few times and I managed to get a submission once. I threw him a couple of times but noticed that his takedown defense is good for a BJJ guy. His positioning is very good. Then we exchanged a few techniques and finished the morning session. This arrangement will be beneficial for both of us.

17.00 - Beginners Muay Thai

As a kid I always wanted to train Muay Thai and the day has finally come. This is my first class. The class was full of kids but I didn't mind and I was happy to learn the basics. The instructor is Samingnum and he was a Muay Thai champion when he competed. I am very glad to have this opportunity to be trained by a coach from Thailand.

23.03.2006. Thursday

11.00 - Boxing

Boxing class with Stig Storm. I have been practicing boxing for little over a month before this and it paid off. I don't consider myself a good boxer but that little experience I have enabled me to participate in the boxing class without problems. The training was very technical and I enjoyed it. I look forward to working with Mr. Storm.

17.00 - MMA Class

The same thing happened as in the previous MMA class. August again destroyed me on the ground and this time told me that I use too much power and that I should try to fell things more. That is probably because I'm trying to compensate the lack of technique with power. Then the class consisted of technical and conditioning training. Conditioning was brutal and we did five 3 minute rounds of different strength exercises. I thought it was over but it wasn't. Then came 5 minutes of full power G'N'P to focus mitts. I presume that 5 minute rounds imitate rounds in MMA fight so I think that these are very good conditioning exercises for MMA.

24.03.2006. - Friday

11.00 - Muay Thai - Mixed group

This time there were not so many kids but mostly older guys and some of them even compete in Muay Thai. After the technical part was over we did some boxing and Muay Thai light sparring. I didn't feel very comfortable sparring with some of the guys but that is to be expected since this is my second Muay Thai class.

17.00 - SW with Jesper Gunnarson

After the warm up we did some attacks from the side mount and some out of the ordinary attacks from the same position. I'm starving for knowledge and I'm trying to absorb as much of it as I can. The practice ended with sparring.

25.03.2006. - Saturday

Finally the day without training. My body really needed that. A few guys from Gladius and I went to Helsingborg for a competition. Martin Janson and Jens Östling competed in Fighter Extreme 5. Martin lost SW match to Bruno Carvalho by points and Jens won Amateur MMA fight with a rear naked choke. There were a few more interesting fights and a lot of boring ones, at least in my opinion. Taekwondo and Taido is not my cup of tea.

26.03.2006. - Sunday

17.00 - MMA

The rest is over and it's time to start again. This time I disciplined myself not to use so much power and speed when rolling with people. August and I even did slow motion rolling so I could feel things more. I will continue to concentrate on technique and positioning in the future. After the warm up we did escapes from the bottom, side mount and mount. After the technical part was over we did those grueling three 5 minute rounds with 1.5 minute rest in between. When the ordeal was over we stretched and that was it for the day.

Information about Marc

Name: Mark Lajhner.
Date of birth: 21.03.1979.
Location: Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro.
Academy: Car Dusan Silni

I started doing judo in 1990. My father forced me to train judo and I didn't like it. I got to see the beauty of judo after a year and that's when I started training more seriously. My extended family consists of judo players : my mother, my father, my four uncles were judo players and a few of my cousins are too. My mother was the national champion twice(in the former Yugoslavia) and one of my uncles is multiple World and European champion for veterans. When I saw the first UFC's in 1995 I fell in love with the sport. I started BJJ(for MMA purposes) in 2003 but did it very irregularly(one or two months of training per year) because judo took precedence. I finally completely switched to MMA in October 2005 and had my first fight in December. I finished junior college for sports(judo coach department) and I'm currently finishing studies at another department in the same college (conditioning and strenght coach).

Notable results :

Nisu zagrevanja zestoka vec se prvih pola sata rolaju u parteru. To sto sam ja zapeo ko sivonja na glavnog baju a on me zatim ispreslisao je ucinilo da to zagrevanje bude zestoko(barem za mene).

Uskoro cemo poceti i sa fizickom pripremom posto cemo(vecina Elitne grupe Gladiusa i ja) imati meceve 06. Maja.

http://www.shootersmma.com/default.asp?page=concept1&iDoit=2

ili malo opsirnije na

http://www.shootersmma.com/default.asp?page=mookmagazine

Vredi procitati.

Bograta2 – Ljudino, zelim ti sve najbolje!!!

Iako sam "mladjan"(27 g) imao sam dosta iskustva oko neuspeha.

Week 2

Monday 27.03.2006.

17.00. SW

In the first 30 minutes we warmed up and I rolled with Jens Östling. After that Alexander Proder showed us a few stand up techniques as well as some ground ones. We repeated a few escapes we did in MMA class the day before and I was glad to do so because practice makes perfect...We finished the practice with sparring.

19.30. Muay Thai

The SW class was finished at 19.00 so I had 30 minutes before Muay Thai class began. I used that time to drink a carb drink, eat a protein bar and stretch lightly. I asked Samingum if I could skip the warm up (because I was already warmed up) and he agreed.
When the practice of technique begun I joined in.
After that we did a few rounds of boxing and Muay Thai sparring. I constantly have to remind myself to keep my chin down, clench my teeth together and breathe through the nose when engaged in the exchange of blows. All these bad habits could cost me in an MMA match so I will work hard to correct them.

Tuesday 28.03.2006.

17.00 MMA

I should have gone to the morning Muay Thai class but I was too exhausted.
Some of the people got sick and couldn't come to the training but there were more than enough people to train with. We did some switches from boxing to takedowns and takedown defense. Then came the takedowns of the cage with follow ups and G'N'P to the pads. The atmosphere in training is very good and everybody has been very friendly to me. They correct me when necessary and I appreciate that very much.
Than came two 5 minute rounds of hurdle jumping, dummy throws, partner throws and getting up from the knees with partner on your back. I found that exercise easier than the one with dumbbells and plates. I think that's probably because I've been throwing and lifting people all my life and the break in between is longer.

Wednesday 29.03.2006.

17.00. SW with Martin Janson

I asked Martin to show me some guard passes because I feel that is the area I'm not very good at. My usual answer for a person in guard is a heel hook but it doesn't always work that way, so I need to learn guard passes. Later on we did some leg locks and arm locks which we drilled with numerous repetitions. And that is the only way to ingrain technique.

19.30. Beginners Muay Thai with Yoav Dan

After the SW class I rested and stretched for 30 minutes and than went on to Muay Thai class. We did some basic moves and the training wasn't very intense since it is a beginners group. That was fine with me since I already had SW.

Thursday 30.03.2006.

11.00. Boxing with Stig Storm

My concentration wasn't at its best during this class. I didn't sleep very well last night since I slept on the floor.
I'm sharing a single room with a friend of mine and I'll soon make some calls to try to find a room or a small flat for rent. It's very nice of him for wanting to share his room with me but the place is just too small for the two of us.

17.00. MMA

As always the first 30 minutes were reserved for warm up with rolling.
After that August demonstrated clinch fighting which we drilled for a long time.
Clinch fighting consisted of strategies used by Chute Boxe and Randy Couture. Knees from a Thai clinch are Chute Boxes’ preference, and wrestling tie ups and dirty boxing are Couture's.
Last but not least came the strength endurance exercises and G'N'P with full power.

Friday 31.03.2006.

17.00. SW

I skipped the morning Muay Thai class and only did SW in the afternoon. I did that because we will not have Saturday off as we usually do. We will have a no gi seminar on Saturday so I wanted to be rested.

Dalibor Petrovic was a substitute coach since Martin Janson couldn't make it.
We practiced some takedowns, submissions and guard passes and rolled afterwards.

Saturday 01.04.2006.

10.00. No gi seminar with Bruno Carvalho

Bruno Carvalho is a 24 year old Judo and BJJ black belt. He also competes in SW and MMA.
In the first part of the seminar which lasted until 12.00 we drilled some ground techniques. He showed some techniques I really wanted to know (like from knee on belly to arm lock transition).

Than we had a lunch break and the seminar continued at 13.30.
As the seminar continued we drilled more ground techniques and after that we could ask questions.
I asked him which throwing techniques from Judo he uses in SW and MMA. He showed 4 of them and I was not completely convinced all of them would work in MMA. We finished around 17.00 and we spent five and a half hours on the mat in total. It was a good seminar.

Sunday 02.04.2006.

17.00 MMA

At the beginning of the class August and Elina showed how to properly work with the pads for G'N'P. After that we did some closing the distance drills and clinch tactics which we later combined. At the end of the class we did conditioning and G'N'P.

Evo i uncut verzije.

After the practice i asked Besam Josef if he would fight a friend or a brother in an MMA match.
Whenever i talk to people about this subject the usual answer is that they would never fight a close person in MMA.
The usual conversation goes like this :

ME : Why wouldn't you fight a friend or a brother in MMA?

THEM : Because i could never hit or hurt a close person.

ME : I've fought many of my close friends in Judo.

THEM : Judo is different. You don't deliberately hit or hurt a person in Judo.

ME : If MMA is a sport, and it is, than you should fight anyone. I can understand people that don't like MMA. They don't like fighting and wouldn't fight anybody and that's ok.

THEM : MMA is a sport but i couldn't hit a friend or a brother.

ME : But you could hit some other guy? Maybe he is a good person, just like your friend or brother is? If you think hitting is bad than you shouldn't hit anyone.

Conclusion : People usually state emotions as a reason why they wouldn't fight a close person.
I think they are wrong.
MMA is trying hard to become a mainstream sport and this attitude doesn't help. Refusing to fight a close person is not ethical. I'm not saying that you should ask to fight a close person but if the day comes(like it almost happened in the 2005 Pride GP between Silva and Shogun) you shouldn't avoid it. If both competitors are mature individuals than there shouldn't be any problems.
It is a sport, not a street fight.

So you either fight everybody or nobody.

I knew he was better than me on the ground, which he demonstrated by submitting me twice, but i was curious about his throwing ability.
I threw him a few times and didn't experience difficulties in doing so. I'm a little disappointed in his Judo and I found that Martin Janson is more difficult to throw.
August submitted him twice. First with a rear naked choke and after that with a figure four on a foot which he didn't completely finish in fear of hurting him(Bruno didn't tap), but he got it cleanly.
