No call for recognitions in OIC resolution

DAMASCUS, PRIŠTINA -- The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) today in Damascus, Syria, adopted a resolution related to the Kosovo question.

Although Skender Hyseni, appointed by the Kosovo Albanian government in Priština as its foreign minister, reacted to the news by welcoming the vote, diplomatic sources in Belgrade told B92 that the text that was adopted today does not contain an explicit call on Islamic countries to recognize Kosovo.

The document also fails to mention "Kosovo's statehood", and instead only calls for "assistance to Muslim brothers".

The ministry led by Hyseni said in a statement that the document that passed today appraises that "progress has been made in Kosovo after the independence declaration, welcomes UNMIK's reconfiguration, the deployment of EULEX in all of Kosovo, and calls on the international community to help the movements in Kosovo".

Earlier today, Albanian FM Lulzim Basha told Priština's Albanian language daily Koha Ditore that “it is not true that the Islamic Conference rejected the Saudi Arabian proposal and that it has made changes, as Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić told the media,” adding that the proposal would be voted on today "in the original version proposed by Saudi Arabia".

Basha did not want to speculate as to the outcome of the vote, but said that he believed that the resolution would be adopted.

Jeremić said yesterday that the draft resolution, in which Saudi Arabia called on Islamic countries to recognize Kosovo independence, had not been approved at the ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Damascus, because several member-states had submitted amendments to the draft.

Koha Ditore writes that Kosovo Deputy Foreign Minister Vlore Chitaku said that “things are going well in Damascus,” and that the resolution would be voted on in the form submitted by Saudi Arabia.

“We cannot prejudge the results of the voting, but we are doing our job, and we are in constant contact with the Secretariat of the Conference and with officials of individual countries. We believe that the resolution will be adopted,” she said.

Jeremić’s cabinet stated yesterday that a resolution that is neutral in status had been accepted, in which Kosovo’s statehood was not mentioned, and which did not call on Muslim countries to recognize Kosovo.

Pa izgleda da je prihvacena rezolucija u kojoj se nijednom recju ne pominje Kosovo....

Kosovo FM thanks all OIC members for the adopted resolution
May 25 (Kosovo Times) - His Excellency Skender Hyseni, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo, has welcomed the “Kosovo Resolution” adopted in the 36 Ministerial Summit in Damascus. Kosovo MoFA informs that Minister Hyseni considers the OIC Resolution as very important since it will help many from the member states of the OIC to decide in favor of the recognition of the independence of Kosovo. Minister Hyseni greets and highly evaluates the contribution of all member states of the OIC given to the adoption of this resolution.

Kosovo MoFA informs that Minister Hyseni has spoken with the Albanian FM Basha in Damascus and has thanked him and the MoFA of Albania for their work on the OIC resolution.

Srbija se dobro pripremila i uspela da zaustavi još jedan ozbiljan pokušaj narušavanja svog teritorijalnog integriteta, istakao je Stefanović. On je naveo da je Srbija preduzela široku diplomatsku aktivnost koja je trajala dva meseca i kulminirala u poslednjih 72 sata, kada je šef diplomatije Vuk Jeremić razgovarao sa više od 15 ministara spoljnih poslova članica OIK-a. U Damasku je od 23. do 25. maja održan sastanak Ministarskog saveta OIK-a. According to a written press release by the OIC, "Kosovo declared independence after many years of making efforts for its people. We join in this happy result. We renew our support to our brothers and sisters there. The Islamic world will extend all support to the newly founded Kosovo. We have no doubt that an independent Kosovo will add important value to the Muslim world."
