Midsomer is an English fictional county that appears in the British TV Series Midsomer Murders, which is adapted from Caroline Graham's series of novels featuring Inspector Barnaby.
The county town is Causton, a middle-sized town where the chief protagonist, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, lives with his wife, Joyce. It is also where the Criminal Investigation Department is located. Many of the villages and small towns have the word Midsomer before their name (e.g. Midsomer Deverell, Midsomer Mallow). Midsomer is notable for its particularly high crime rate. The Midsomer Constabulary are inundated with the number of murder cases that come their way. In 'Down Among the Dead Men', the credibility of Midsomer as a coherent county was tested by the introduction of a coastline. Unlike previous jaunts for Barnaby (e.g. Snowdonia) this location was clearly meant to be part of the fictional Midsomer county. This throws into doubt the Midsomer county map which usually accompanies the DVD release of a Midsomer episode.
