Windows 10

The Windows 10 1909 Feature Update is around the corner and is expected to be released sometime next week. Unlike previous Feature Updates, Windows 10 1909, codenamed 19H2, is more like a larger-than-normal cumulative update or service pack.
Microsoft has already started pushing Windows 10 1909 to Windows Insiders on the Release Preview ring and Microsoft has added it as an option on WSUS. It is clear that with this information, and other hints provided on Twitter, that Windows 1909 has a good chance of being released over the coming week.

While the Windows 10 1909 Feature Update focuses on performance enhancements and bug fixes, there are some noticeable new features that we have outlined below.
Changes in Windows 10 1909
Alexa, Cortana and others on Lockscreen
Microsoft has been closely working with Amazon to improve Alexa experience on Windows 10 and Amazon has made it quite easy to use Alexa with your PC.
The Alexa app for Windows 10 allows you to use the digital assistant completely hands-free and voice capabilities work even when the app is running in the background or foreground.
With Windows 10 version 1909, Microsoft will allow third-party digital assistants like Alexa to voice activate above the lock screen. In other words, Alexa will soon work above the lock screen - all you need to do is ask her.
Create Calendar events from the Taskbar
Windows 10 is also getting a new feature that will allow you to create calendar events directly from the taskbar. To create a new event from the taskbar, you have to:
  1. Click on Time & Date taskbar icon.
  2. This opens Calendar view and you can click a date to create an event.
    Taskbar Calendar

  3. You have to give your event a name, and you can also specify time and location.
Start menu automatic expansion
As we noted, Windows 10 version 1909 is technically a servicing update and some of the features are extremely humdrum. For example, Microsoft has updated the navigation pane on the Start menu to allow it to expand automatically when you drag your cursor over it or closer to the options like Settings cog icon.
This will expand the left sidebar so you can see the title of each option as shown below.

Action Center & Notifications page
The Notifications settings page has been updated with images showing representations of how notifications will be shown in 'banner' mode and in the 'Action Center'.
Notification examples

Notifications page is getting another change that should help you find out most active notification senders. You will notice that Notifications are now sorted by most recently shown notification instead of the sender name in alphabetical order. This will allow you to find the most frequent notification sender, so you can turn off sounds or notifications for that particular app entirely.
Finally a “Manage notifications” button has also been added to the top of Action Center, so you can quickly access Action Center and Notification settings. Previously, users were required to open the Settings app and navigate to the “Notifications & actions” page.

File Explorer uses Windows Search
File Explorer has been updated with Windows Search integration and traditional indexed results will now also include your OneDrive content.
Battery efficiency improvements
In theory, the battery of select PCs will struggle less after applying Windows 10 version 1909 update. Microsoft has also implemented power efficiency improvements for PCs with certain processors.
Performance improvements
If the processor powering your PC supports “favored” cores, users will notice performance improvements as Microsoft has implemented a new rotation policy that will send more CPU intensive or critical tasks to those cores that operate faster.
"A CPU may have multiple “favored” cores (logical processors of the highest available scheduling class). To provide better performance and reliability, we have implemented a rotation policy that distributes work more fairly among these favored cores."
You can learn more about this feature: Windows 10 to Boost Performance via Favored CPU Core Optimization
Latency improvements for inking capabilities (OEM only)
For OEMs, a new change has been implemented that would significantly reduce inking latency across native apps. The latency will be determined on hardware capabilities of devices by default, which means the latency won't be based on typical hardware configuration offered by the OS.
Key-rolling or Key-rotation security improvements
Windows 10 19H2 update also includes two new features called 'Key-rolling' and 'Key-rotation' to enable secure delivery of Recovery passwords on MDM managed AAD devices and the process is based on the request from Microsoft Intune, MDM and similar tools.
'Key-rolling' and 'Key-rotation' could boost the security of Windows PCs by preventing accidental recovery of password.
Debugging capabilities for newer Intel processors (OEMs only)
For OEMs and manufacturers, Windows 10 update includes additional debugging capabilities for newer Intel processors

What Is Windows 10X, and How Is It Different?

Microsoft's Surface Neo device.

Windows 10X is a new edition of Windows 10 designed for dual-screen devices like Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Neo, which will be available for the 2020 holiday season next year. It offers a customized interface for these devices.

Windows 10X Is Windows
At its Surface event, Microsoft said Windows 10X “supports the breadth of Windows applications,” which means all traditional Windows desktop applications will work just like they would on Windows 10 Home or Professional. This isn’t an entirely new operating system—it appears to just be a customized version of Windows 10 with an interface designed for these devices.

Optimized For Dual-Screen Devices
Windows 10X has an interface “designed and optimized for dual-screen devices just like Surface Neo,” according to Microsoft.

The Surface Neo is a dual-screen device with a hinge—like a laptop, but if the keyboard section was replaced by a screen. Alternatively, it’s like two tablets connected to each other by a hinge. If you remember Microsoft’s canceled Courier concept device, it’s very similar to that.

No More Live Tiles
Part of optimizing the operating system for dual-screen devices seems to be the removal of Live Tiles. There’s a new Start menu with a simplified, icon-based application and website launcher. This appears to be the leaked Start menu from earlier this year.

Dual-Screen Interface Tweaks
Microsoft's Surface Neo device with its keyboard attached and the Wunderbar visible.

When you launch an app, it launches on one side of the device. It’s a bit like Windows 10’s Snap feature—apps will open on one screen (or one side of the device) rather than across both displays. You can drag an application’s window to the middle edge of the screen and release it to “span” the application across both displays. Microsoft says this doesn’t just extend the app across both screens—it also “optimizes” the app’s interface so the app can intelligently take advantage of both screens.

Microsoft also showed off Windows “recognizing the keyboard” placed on one side of the display and revealing the “Wunderbar,” sort of a super-charged version of Apple’s MacBook touchbar that offers buttons, a trackpad, and even a large section of screen you can play videos on. Microsoft said this is something “Neo” does, but it’s likely part of Windows 10X and one of the many new interface tricks being added for these devices.

Windows 10X and dual-screen devices are still a while off yet. Microsoft is announcing Windows 10X a year ahead of the release of the Surface Neo so developers will have time to try it and optimize their apps for the new software. We don’t have all the details yet, but we’ll update this article when we learn more.

Microsoft Announces Processor Requirements for Windows 10 November 2019 Update

The same list applies to Windows 10 version 1903 too

Processor requirements for Windows 10 version 1909 and 1903

Microsoft has released the processor requirements for Windows 10 November 2019 Update, also known as Windows 10 19H2 or version 1909.
The very same list also concerns Windows 10 version 1903, or May 2019 Update, which debuted earlier this year, and comes with a series of changes.
Basically, Microsoft has added the latest Intel, Ryzen, and ARM processors, but at the same time, it also includes a rather weird mention of Snapdragon 855.
First and foremost, it’s worth noting that Windows 10 version 1909 works on Intel’s 10th Gen chips, and these include the Intel Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 variants that are already running on some PCs.
The updated list also reveals that Windows 10 version 1903 and version 1909 support Intel Xeon E-22xx, Intel Atom (J4xxx/J5xxx and N4xxx/N5xxx), Celeron and Pentium processors.
Mobile chip running Windows 10? Not so fast
At the same time, Microsoft says that you’ll need up to AMD 7th Generation processors, including the following chips: A-Series Ax-9xxx & E-Series Ex-9xxx & FX-9xxx), AMD Athlon 2xx processors, AMD Ryzen 3/5/7 3xxx, AMD Opteron, and AMD EPYC 7xxx.
As far as Qualcomm processors are concerned, Microsoft mistakenly lists the Snapdragon 855, a mobile processor that is already being used by a series of Android flagships, but isn’t supposed to be used on PCs. Most likely, this is just an error on Microsoft’s side and the company will most likely edit the list once again in the future to remove the mention of Snapdragon 855.
As Neowin notes, previous versions of Windows 10, including version 1809 (October 2018 Update), listed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850, which is indeed a mobile chip and is compatible with Windows 10 on ARM.
Windows 10 November 2019 Update is projected to launch in the coming weeks, and according to a recent leak, this could happen on November 12.
