Stunning aerial views show Niagara Falls nearly completely frozen as western New York is hit with deadliest storm in 50 years

  • Aerial shots captured the stunning aftermath of the storm from Niagara Falls, New York on Tuesday
  • The photos were taken following the deadliest storm the area has seen in decades
  • Tourists in massive coats were seen gazing at the partial frozen water falls as a rainbow became visible
  • About 50 people have been reported dead since the Christmas weekend storm, which is still ongoing
A rainbow was seen across the tourist hotspot on Tuesday as spectators in winter coats gathered to look at the partially frozen waterfalls.

Aerial shots captured the aftermath of the catastrophic storm, which hit about 25 miles south of Niagara Falls. Mountains of ice built up near the waterfront and the vast expanse was blanketed in thick, white snow.

A whopping 3,160 tons of water flows over the Falls every second, meaning it almost never entirely freezes over due to the sheer volume of water. Instead, it is often the surface water and mist which freezes over.

The monster storm swept through New York state over Christmas weekend and quickly became the deadliest storm in 50 years. About 50 people were dead as of Tuesday.

'Unfortunately, police expects that number to rise,' Byron Brown, Buffalo mayor Tweeted.

Kathy Hochul, New York state's governor and a Buffalo native, described the storm aftermath as resembling 'a war zone.'

Record-setting cold shocks New York City

A frozen fountain in New York City's Bryant Park this weekend.

The Big Apple felt more like the North Pole early Saturday morning, with major airports reporting record low temperatures, Central Park hovering in single digits and Bryant Park’s iconic water fountain looking more like a massive icicle.

John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens reached a frigid record low for the date of 4 degrees, breaking the old record for the same date there in 1996, Fox Weather Meteorologist Christopher Tate said Saturday. Newark Airport and LaGuardia Airport in Queens both logged lows of 5 degrees, also breaking previous lows recorded in 1996 of 7 degrees and 10 degrees, respectively.

In Central Park, the thermometer likewise dropped to 4 degrees at 7 a.m., nearing a record low for the same date of 0 degrees in 1918, according to Tate.
