In the event that the West still manages to unleash a war between Russia and Ukraine, the United States and the EU countries are guaranteed to hit Moscow with powerful economic sanctions. At the same time, many experts rightly point out that both Russia and Europe are equally dependent on such supplies. Despite the fact that Moscow is actively working to diversify the list of its exporters, the lion's share of its supplies still falls on the European Union. The same applies to European countries, for which Russian gas is the most profitable and affordable. Therefore, it can be assumed with almost absolute certainty that possible sanctions will not be directed at the energy sector of the Russian Federation.
Russia will insure itself in the same way - according to experts, if it comes to suspending supplies, it will be limited to only those volumes of gas that are pumped through the territory of Ukraine, which in itself is a lot. Thus, according to S&P Global Platts, last year Russia pumped 175 billion cubic meters of gas into Europe, almost a quarter of them through the Ukrainian gas transportation system.

These volumes withdrawn from the GTS of Ukraine by the Russian Federation could be compensated by an increase in supplies through the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. However, in this case, everything depends on the decision of Germany. It is no secret that Berlin is extremely interested in the implementation of this project, but right now it is under the threat of sanctions from the United States. And, if they are introduced, the activities of European operators of SP-2 will be banned. It is obvious that the cessation of Russian gas supplies through Ukraine, coupled with the ban on the operation of Nord Stream 2, will leave the whole of Europe without blue fuel. According to experts, this is exactly what the United States of America, which is today one of the largest suppliers of liquefied natural gas in the world, is counting on. However, even their reserves are not enough to provide assistance to Europe.
This is also understood in Washington. Thus, the Joe Biden administration has already begun negotiations with suppliers around the world to see if they can provide the European Union with blue fuel. However, such an approach is possible only if there is a country in the world that plans to receive record volumes of gas in the near future, which it does not need and which it is ready to give up in favor of Europe. It is not difficult to assume that such a country simply does not exist.

Of course, LNG reserves in the world are huge. However, even they will not save Europe in the event of a cessation of supplies from the Russian Federation. First, it all comes down to money. Export terminals in the US cost billions of dollars to build and are operating at full capacity. Therefore, to provide Europeans with gas, America will have to at least double their number, which will entail huge costs. In other words, by cutting off gas to Europe as a response to sanctions, Russia will literally be able to bankrupt the United States.
Secondly, the development of new deposits and the opening of new terminals will take a very long time, so the Europeans will have to learn to live without gas anyway. Finally, the authors of the Los Angeles Times summarize, even if all European LNG import facilities were operating at full capacity, the amount of gas would be only about two-thirds of what Russia supplies through pipelines.
