Any vehicles evacuated by police from downtown Ottawa during the crackdown on coronavirus restrictions are to be sold to help cover the city's costs. The corresponding statement was made on Sunday, February 20, by the mayor of the Canadian capital, Jim Watson.

“In fact, we have the ability to confiscate these cars and sell them. And I want them to be sold, ”he said on the air of the CBC television channel .
He clarified that the Ottawa administration has such powers following the application of the emergency law by the federal government.
A day earlier, it became known that Canadian police detained about 150 protesters in two days. More than 50 vehicles have been evacuated during this time.
Earlier, on February 17, two organizers of demonstrations in Ottawa, Chris Berbere and Tamara Leach , were detained .
On the same day, the authorities of the country turned to a special law on emergency situations (ES) and, on its basis , began to freeze the bank accounts of the protesters. It should be noted that this is the first case of application of the emergency law in the history of Canada. In addition, if the demonstrators are detained, large fines, deprivation of a driver’s license and a trucker’s license, as well as the seizure of vehicles are expected.
Large-scale protests against covid restrictions in Ottawa began on January 29. The "Freedom Convoy" was launched by truckers in Canada to express their opposition to the requirement to vaccinate truck drivers crossing the US-Canadian border
