Companion in the night

It's late, hot summer night,
A man is returning home,
surrounded by darkness, there's no light,
He is all alone.

All streets are empty,
Not a single soul,
In this damned city,
Fatigue took it's toll.

As he walks, he is thinking,
What a miserable life he had,
Lower and lower he is sinking,
Oh, it so sad.

A glimpse of a little body.
Made him stop in his tracks,
Something cold and snotty,
Was touching his legs.

"Shoo little one, I don't need you!"
He was saying, but in vain,
Ah, that is so untrue,
Blinded he was by pain.

The dog kept following,
Like he had a mission,
A man felt it growing,
Strange, weird suspicion.

"Why is he following me?"
He thought to himself,
"I don't want to pet him, can't he see
That I need consolation myself?"

Then dog turned and disappeared,
Man felt incredible sadness,
The fog in front of his eyes was cleared,
He defeated his madness.

"Thank you little one,
I will never forget,
What you have done,
I am forever in your debt."
