Grant 'snubbed' by players

Avram Grant was snubbed three times by Chelsea's playing staff in the wake of last weekend's League Cup final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The Israeli manager, who accused the media of disseminating 'lies' about his position ahead of yesterday's emphatic win at West Ham, saw his authority questioned after calling a team meeting on Tuesday morning.

Though Grant, who says there is 'no problem' in his relationship with the players, scheduled the training ground gathering for 11am, his squad failed to turn up at the designated time. Upon instructing a club employee to summon them for the session, he was informed that the players were holding a separate meeting of their own that would not finish for another 10 minutes. When the squad still had not assembled at that time, Grant made his way to the players, only to be told they still had matters to discuss and was asked to leave the room. The manager did so without complaint.

Once the players had concluded their gathering, they again proved uncooperative. Seeking to end reports of squad discontent at his handling of the final, Grant asked the players to voice any concerns. It is understood that because they were worried that what they said would be relayed to owner Roman Abramovich, no team member spoke up.

Grant had been called in to Cobham the previous day when Abramovich demanded talks with the first team's entire coaching staff. Unprecedented in the past four seasons at Chelsea, the Russian's request resulted in Grant cancelling an arrangement with the Israel Football Federation to study for the Uefa Pro-Licence he must obtain to continue managing the team next season.

Abramovich had also spent a significant length of time in the Chelsea dressing room at Wembley after Sunday's 2-1 defeat, been present for each of the team's final three training days before the final and held private discussions with Grant on the eve of the game.

There remains considerable discontent among the Chelsea squad about preparations for the final. Having witnessed Abramovich address Michael Essien about errors in his play after a Champions League group game this season, some players believe the owner influences team selection and strategy through his deputy Eugene Tenenbaum. Grant partially denied this on Friday, saying: 'Roman Abramovich has never even seen me about one player that he needs to play, never said to me anything about picking the team.'

Whoever did choose Sunday's team and tactics, the players were unhappy that they did not know who they would be playing alongside nor which formation they would be using until the day of the game. Ashley Cole learned of his omission in the pages of a national newspaper, Michael Ballack believed he was to start only to be supplanted by Shaun Wright-Phillips, while Alex was asked if he would stand down for John Terry on the Saturday. 'It was frustrating,' Alex told Brazilian television last week. 'The boss called me over to talk on Saturday. He told me that I'd been playing well, but it's the English cup and that Terry is the captain, he has to play. He asked me if there was any problem and I said, "No, no problem at all. I'm here to do my job."'

From Thursday onwards, senior players had asked whether the team would be playing in their customary 4...#8209;3...#8209;3 formation or another shape to accommodate the selection of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka as joint strikers for the first time. They were told to 'wait and see' and 'not to worry' about the issue.

Adding to the tension was Terry's nervousness over being passed over for the in-form Alex. During Saturday's final training session the captain's unease spilled over into a fight with Henk ten Cate, ostensibly over the assistant coach's whistle-happy interruptions of a practice match to chide midfielder John Obi Mikel. Terry was not reassured of his place until 11pm on Saturday night.

Grant's job is not in immediate jeopardy. Abramovich has too much invested in the appointment of an under-qualified coach to one of European football's top positions to dispense with him after one Wembley defeat. Sources close to the owner insist he has not moved to change the manager nor sanctioned any approach to the Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard.

An uneasy atmosphere does remain at the club, though. Piet de Visser, who acts as a private adviser to Abramovich on football matters, is an important influence, having recommended several player purchases and the appointment of chief scout Frank Arnesen. Grant's relationship with Arnesen is described as 'frosty'.

Chelsea last night denied that players arrived late for Tuesday's meeting with Grant. They declined to comment on when Ashley Cole and Ballack discovered they were not in the cup final line-up.

Ma ne postaje Kronaldolik, nego ne znam koji im je djavo? Nisu ovakvi bili...Nesto vlada negativna atmosfera mnogoo. A to ne valja.

A stvarno mi je bilo zao kad sam ovo procitala: Grant made his way to the players, only to be told they still had matters to discuss and was asked to leave the room. The manager did so without complaint.
Stvarno nema smisla da se izivljavaju. Nije im on kriv sto je Murinjo otisao, a nije ni samo on kriv za poraz kad oni igraju k'o babe. Znas kad bi ovo uradili da nam je Kapelo trener? ha ha ha..Nikada. Ili Kada su ovo radili kod Murinja? ... Raspasana komanda pa rade sta hoce.

Postigli smo 38 golova,odigrali 26 utakmica,po tom pitanju sedmi smo,a prvi je Arsenal.
Igrali smo 26 utakmica,a primili 17 golova jedino je manje od nas primio Manchester United.
Imamo najboljeg golmana i odbranu (Clean Sheet) posle Manchester Uniteda.
Kad smo kod prosijeka koliko smo golova postigli po utakmici, to je 1.56 sedmi smo i imamo utakmicu manje.
Peti smo po redu,kad govorimo o broju pogodaka u prvom poluvremenu.Prvi je Manchester United.
Sto se tice discipline, devetnaesti smo po redu, sto je stvarno sramota.Prvi je Liverpul.
Najmladji smo u Ligi posle Wigana.Imamo 103 godina...to nisam znala!
Ako pitate za vecinu naseg stadiona,osmi smo.Prvi je Manchester United.
Koliko se posjecuju nase utakmice...osmi smo na listi...
I recite mi,kad smo kod statistike ne moze se reci da Grant radi lose posao!Ako izuzmemo disciplinu (jer ga ne slusaju kreteni)...A sad cemo da vidimo kako je bilo prosle sezone pod Murinjom:
Bili smo drugi u Ligi.
Postigli 64,golova,jedino je Manchester United postigao vise(to zbog Drogbe).
Primili smo najmanje golova,24.
Cech je odbranio svoj gol 22 puta(nismo primili gol u 22 utakmice,to je Clean Sheet).
Prosijek,golova po mecu je 1.68.Od nas je vise dao Manchester United.
Najvise smo golova dali u prvom poluvremenu od svih timova,21 gol.
Ako pitate o disciplini,17smo.
I naravno najmladji posle Wigana .
Sesti po velicini stadiona.
Peti po posjecenosti.
Ipak je Murinjo bolji(sto je objektivno)...ali sezona nije zavrsena!!!

Sve to, ta nedisciplina, vuce korene od tog momenta. Zato sto igraci znaju da Murinjo NIKADA ne bi otisao da nije bilo Romana, takodje znaju da ma sta Murinjo pricao to NIJE bila njegova odluka. Znaju da se oni nista nisu pitali (sto je normalno) ali da jesu, on ne bi otisao. Kad je odlazio pozdravio se samo sa Terijem i Frenkijem sa ostalima nije, a moje misljenje je da ne zato sto nije hteo ,nego zato sto nije mogao (sam je za sebe rekao da je veliki emotivac). Igraci sve to znaju i mislim da je ovo njihov nacin da izraze nezadovoljstvo postojecim sistemom. Nije da bi meni, niti mi je, svejedno, ali oni zaboravljaju da je uspeh kluba najbitniji.

Chelsea Football Club has agreed to be the exclusive football club partner of a grass roots talent search in southern China, shown on television.

The Super Soccer Star show will be broadcast in the province of Guangdong in April with the four finalists visiting our Academy and Stamford Bridge later in the summer.

The show will be televised on the Guangdong TV Sports Channel, one of China's largest regional broadcasters.

Soccer schools and coaches across the Guangdong province will send their most promising 14-16 year old players to participate in the selection process over the 13 episodes of the show.

The tests, by which participants are judged are based on those used at the Chelsea Academy, and our involvement is the latest club project in China designed to promote grass roots in the country.

We are already the official football development partner of the Asian Football Confederation's Vision China project that aims to set up 10 city leagues in China.

Chief Executive Peter Kenyon said: 'We are delighted to be involved in such an innovative project that helps us deliver on our continuing commitment to promote grass roots football amongst youngsters in China.

'The show complements our involvement in Vision China with the AFC as well as showcasing Chelsea to a large audience and we look forward to hosting the finalists of Super Soccer Star in England.'

The Guangdong TV Sports Channel broadcasts across the Guangdong province to its 12 major cities and also certain parts of neighbouring provinces Guangxi and Zhongxing reaching a total of 50 million estimated viewers.
The channel is also one of the official broadcasting partners of the FA Premier League in China.

The Super Soccer Star Show, which is co-produced by British company Galleon plc, will provide a mix of football and entertainment as well as interactive content for viewers.

Chelsea boss Avram Grant has launched a stinging attack on the media for its coverage of his side following their Carling Cup final defeat to Tottenham.

Grant, 52, criticised Chelsea's detractors for inaccurate reporting and a lack of respect for his achievements.

"I respect the media in England - even though you gave me no credit at the beginning, but since then I've heard a lot of lies," said the Israeli.

"You're trying to hurt the team, hurt the club because we lost one game."

Referring to reports of player discontent and allegations that chief scout Frank Arnesen wants Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard as the next Chelsea manager, Grant was unequivocal in his rebuke of the media.

He also hit out at suggestions that were made when he took over as manager, following Jose Mourinho's sacking, that owner Roman Abramovich influences team selection.

"Roman Abramovich has never told me one player that he needs to play, never told me to pick the team this way or that," said Grant.

"I'm in charge. Please, you need to respect my professionalism.

"You didn't behave too nicely. Now I don't respect you too much because we lost one game and you've taken it too far. I don't like it.

"You hurt my players, you hurt the club and this is not the right way."

Grant confirmed that captain John Terry and first-team coach Henk ten Cate were involved in a training ground disagreement prior to the final but insisted the pair made their peace immediately afterwards.

"No team in the world is without fighting," he said. "Sometimes it happens. Everything was okay a minute later. They shook hands, hugged."

Chelsea have lost three times in 35 games since Grant replaced Mourinho in September but critics have pointed out that those defeats came against Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Only once, against Tottenham in 2006, did Chelsea lose to one of those opponents during Mourinho's reign, while the Portuguese did not lose a cup final during his time at Stamford Bridge.

"If you speak about the last game, we didn't play well and we lost," said Grant. "The other five months, it was okay.

"Sunday was a bad game, a bad day in the life of the team. It happens sometimes. We lost the game but we are fighters and we move on."

When asked about his relationship with the players following the Wembley defeat, Grant replied: "Why didn't you ask that question a week ago?

"Just because we lost one game. I don't want to defend myself about this.

"The spirit is very good in the team. We're sorry about what happened against Tottenham. I'm sorry, but we did a good job in the previous five months."

Grant also rejected reports that some players had been critical of his team selection after the Carling Cup final and accused agents of creating unrest within the camp by leaking incorrect information to the media.
