Another older SF writer with very high literary standards was James Blish (but apparently not all of his output was so good). His novel (by collection of short stories) "The Seedling Stars" was a landmark, where instead of terraforming planets humans are transformed by "panthropy" (sounds like a prediction of genetic engineering), a particular story therein "Surface Tension" has been widely reprinted and is a great one. His Cities in Flight series (also collected as novel) is also a classic (I have read only one of those in an anthology). His novel A Case of Conscience is also highly regarded, it blends theology and SF in a unique way.
