VIENNA, Austria — Former Poland international Adam Ledwon was found dead at his house in southern Austria. He was 34.
Police in Klagenfurt confirmed that the Austria Kaernten player was found dead late Wednesday but did not immediately reveal more details.
"We are shocked," Austria Kaernten manager Michael Heiden said Thursday. "A suicide note was found but not translated yet. We await the inquiries."
Ledwon's body was reportedly found by club teammate Patrick Wolf, who went to the defender's house after he unexpectedly missed a friendly match against Brueckl on Wednesday evening.
Ledwon, who played 18 matches for Poland from 1993-98, was working as a commentator for Polsat television at the European Championship, where Poland played Austria in Vienna later Thursday.
"This is very sad news, especially at such (a) moment," Polish football association spokesman Zbigniew Kozminski said. "The players have heard it. Some among them, those older, remember him, played with him."
The Polish association turned down an offer by UEFA to observe a minute's silence before Thursday's match.
"Nothing has been planned on behalf of the Polish association," team press officer Marta Alf said.
Ledwon played for GKS Katowice in Poland and Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Koeln in Germany in the 1990s and moved in 2000 to Austria, where he was with Austria Vienna, Admira Vienna and Sturm Graz before joining Austria Kaernten in 2007.
Ledwon was survived by wife Mariola and sons Kamil and Wojciech.
