Eurosport:A first-half Arjen Robben strike was enough for the Netherlands to beat Serbia & Montenegro 1-0 in their Group C match in Leipzig on Sunday. The Chelsea winger ran onto a deft flick from Ruud van Nistelrooy to outsprint Goran Gavranjic and slot the ball home past Dragoslav Jevric.
Robben was the difference between the two sides, his searing pace and surging runs into the box causing constant problems to the Serbian defence.
But coach Marco Van Basten will have cause for concern after unconvincing displays from a number of his players allowed his side to be put under pressure for long periods of the game.
The Dutch controlled the first half, with Robben almost doubling their lead but seeing his thunderous shot saved by Serbia goalkeeper Dragoslav Jevric.
Savo Milosevic had a couple of lucrative efforts from outside the box, but Edwin van der Sar was generally untested in the Dutch goal.
But Serbia coach Ilija Petkovic's decision to bring on Ognijen Koroman just before half-time changed the match around, the midfielder a constant menace to the Dutch defensive duo of Andre Ooijer and Joris Mathijsen.
The Serbs continued to press in the second half and Koroman was only denied the equaliser by a fine diving save from Van der Sar after cutting in from the right.
Robben had a shot flash past the post and Robin van Persie drilled a free-kick across the face of goal, but Marco van Basten will thank his lucky stars that the Serbian equaliser never came.
