Croatia: Trade balance deficit in 2006 widened to EUR 8.8bn

Trade balance deficit reached ca. 26% of GDP in 2006, indicating continuation of external imbalances. We anticipate no dramatic change in 2007, as imports would likely be under pressure from domestic demand for both consumer and capital goods, while investments in production capacities within tradable sector are still insufficient to offset imports’ demand effects associated with domestic demand. However, buoyant exports may at least prevent further deterioration of the trade balance.
